Cape Cod

Am Anfang war ich ziemlich empört darüber, dass Starmore Cape Cod als sehr schwierig (challenging knitting) eingestuft hat, während sie für Inishmore nur Erfahrung (for experienced knitters) notwendig findet. Letzterer - may I mention - wird bis zu 32 Mal in einer Reihe verkreuzt, während sich bei Cape Cod ein Gansey-Muster (also ein reines Reliefmuster ohne Verkreuzungen) mit einem einzelnen Zopf abwechselt.

Pah, dachte ich, okay, dann stricke ich schnell mal Cape Cod. Alter Falter, da hat mich doch meine Aufgeblasenheit fein eingeholt. Das Muster selbst ist in der Tat nicht schwierig und der Schnitt ist im Prinzip sehr linear. Nur wird das mein erster Pulli mit einem Unterarm- und Halsausschnittspickel. Und das bei einer Maschenprobe, die ungefähr gar nicht mit der von Frau Starmore Gestrickten zusammenpasst. Meine ist 27 Maschen x 43 Reihen, ihre hat 34 Maschen x 45 Reihen, das Ganze aber in einer sehr viel kleineren Größe als die für mich Notwendige.

Bis zum Unterarmspickel war alles einfach (okay, 43 Reihen für 10 cm stricken ist motivationstechnisch nicht einfach), aber für den Spickel bin ich veritabel dreimal ums Dorf gelaufen, bis ich die endgültige Länge meines Cape Cod und damit die Größe des Spickels entschieden habe. Dumm nur, dass sich das Ding ja am Ärmel forsetzt und da passt natürlich die für den Leib notwendige Proportionierung nicht mehr. Die gute Starmore hat Cape Cod nämlich genau in einer Größe mit den dafür exakt richtigen Proportionen bei ihrer Maschenprobe entworfen und wenn ich ihr da folge, kriege ich zu enge Affenärmel.

Schaut man sich das Ding an, hat es am Ärmel ein komplett anderes Muster als am Leib (das rettet mich!), bzw. da gibts dreimal einen Mustersatz im Wechsel mit glatt rechten Passagen. Damit das passt, muss ich mir jetzt die komplette Länge mit allen Abnahmen aufschreiben und sie mit meiner Maschenprobe und erforderlichen Weite umrechnen. Das Ganze natürlich schön im Rapport, damits auch unter dem Arm fein aussieht.

Nun stricke ich überhaupt erst seit diesem Jahr nach Mustern. Ähm, und am Ende finde ich immer noch Inishmore deutlich anstrengender als Cape Cod. Denn die Rechnerei macht mir nicht soviel aus wie drei aufeinander folgende Wandermaschen sechsmal im Gestrick zu kreuzen.

The latter - may I mention - is cabled up to 32 times in a row, whereas Cape Cod has passages of knitting purling alternating with a quite simple cable.

Okay, I thought, let's just knit a Cape Cod. Well, seems I've caught up with my swollen head. The pattern itself is really quite simple and the pattern is quite linear. Still it's my first sweater with both sleeve and neck gusset. And this in a gauge not fitting at all to the one of Starmore: Mine is 27 sts x 43 rows, Starmore's is 35 sts x 45 rows for a sweater in a considerably smaller size than required for my sweater.

Until the sleeve gusset everything was a piece of cake (well, 43 rows for 4in is not a piece of cake in terms of motivation), but for the gusset I really had to walk around the village three times in order to decide on the wanted length of my sweater and following that the shape of the gusset. Unfortunately this gusset goes on of course at the sleeve and for this my shape doesn't fit at all. Madam Starmore designed this sweater absolutely precisely in one size with the right proportions in her gauge (she even writes the number of rows!). And if I follow her, my sleeves will be much too long and a tiny bit too tight.

Fortunately Cape Cod has a completely different pattern at the sleeves (this saves me). Precisely spoken it has three patterns at the sleeves alternating with stocking stitch. So I will have to compare her setting up of the sleeve with my gauge and from this I will have to calculate the thing according to the needed proportion with fitting pattern repeats, so it will look nice and tidy.

I've only started knitting given patterns this year. Well, and at the end of the day I still find Inishmore much more challenging as Cape Cod. After all calculating according to measurements is not as laborious as cabling three times two stitches six times in a row in at least three different ways.
