Die Schönheit der Mathematik | The beauty of mathematics

Das ist ein Fleck. Ein 15x15cm großer Fleck wiegt 14 Gramm. Er besteht aus der Hälfte einfarbig jeansblauem Sockengarn, die andere Hälfte ist selbstmusterndes Sockengarn in braun, beige und dunkelblau. Was zum Henker, denkt Ihr bestimmt, soll das? Das ist nichtmal angefangen, geschweige den fertig.

This is a patch. A 6x6 inches patch weighs 14 grams. It contains half jeansblue sockyarn, half variegated sockyarn in bown, beige and dark blue. What the heck, you might think, is that supposed to mean? This thing isn't really started, let alone finished.

Gemach, meine Lieben, die Lösung kommt.

Easy, my dearest readers, the solution will come.

Ich benötige eine Decke und mir ist am Samstag Sockengarn zugelaufen. Viel Sockengarn, das ich nicht zu Socken verarbeiten will, weil selbstmusternd und da stehe ich nicht drauf. Also bot sich an, daraus eine Sockengarndecke zu machen. Weils nicht ganz genug ist, musste anderes Garn aus den Vorräten dazu. 
Und da habe ich zwar nicht ganz genug, aber doch so viel jeanslbaues Sockengarn, dass ich eine Decke mit etwas Improvisation hinbekomme. Alles, was ich brauche, um das Ding auszurechnen und zu entwerfen, ist dieses Patch.

I need another blanket and on Saturday some stray sockyarn found it's way to me. A lot of stray sockyarn, which I don't want to knit into socks, since it is variegated and I don't like that for socks. So it is appropriate, that this stuff will become a blanket. It's not enough for a blanket, so I took some other stuff out of the stash. It's still not enough, but with some improvisation I'll manage to knit a blanket with the variegated yarn and some jeansblue sockyarn. All I need to calculate and design the thing, is this blanket.

Ich wäre stolz wie Oskar, hätte ich mir das selbst ausgedacht. Habe ich aber nicht, die Anleitung heißt Pathways Blanket und ist von Frankie Brown. Sie hatte eine geniale Idee: Mach schräge Patches mit zwei Streifen drin und Du hast alle Möglichkeiten dieser Erde. Glaubt Ihr nicht? Guckt hier:

I would be proud as a peacock, had I had the idea myself. I didn't, the pattern is called Pathways Blanket and the brilliant designer is Frankie Brown. She had a fantastic idea: Knit lots of patches with two stripes of contrasting yarn and you've got all the possibilities on earth. You don't believe me? Look at this:

Na, überzeugt? Das sind insgesamt 96 Läppchen (8x12) in unterschiedlichen Anordnungen. Mir gefallen die beiden mittleren Varianten sehr gut, die anderen finde ich mit diesem bunten Garn etwas unruhig.

Convinced now? These are 96 patches each in different arrangements. I like the two middle ones best, the others are a bit too turbulent for me and this variegated yarn.

Aber noch ist nicht genug der Mathematik: Ein Patch wiegt 14 Gramm, damit benötige ich ohne Rand 672 Gramm pro Farbe, wenn ich das so stricke wie hier entworfen. Da ich von dem blauen Garn mit noch etwas Dunkelblau nur ungefähr 500 Gramm habe, werde ich das eher nicht tun. Ist auch nicht notwendig, meine Häkeldecke ist ein Riesending und auch nur 180 hoch. Daher werde ich schätzungsweise für das Ganze 9x7 Läppchen stricken und dann noch 10cm Rand ringsrum. Dann habe ich eine Größe von 125x155, was ganz gut ist für eine Sofadecke.  Dafür habe ich allerdings noch keine kluge Designidee, weil ich für die bis auf die zweite von oben immer eine grade Zahl in der Breite brauche. Ist aber wurscht, da fällt mir schon etwas dazu ein. Jedenfalls benötige ich dann 450 Gramm pro Farbe, was schon eher meinen Vorräten entspricht.

But this is not the end of our mathematics: One patch weighs 14 grams, so I need 672 grams for each colour excluding the edging, if I knit as designed here. Since I have about 500 grams of the blue yarn together with some dark blue, I won't do that. It's not necessary anyway, my crocheted blanket is huge and still only 180cm high. So I will most probably knit 9x7 patches and make 10cm edging. Then I will have 50x62 inches, which is fairly fine for a lap rug. I'm still to find a nice design idea, since all exept the second require an even number of patches in width. Doesn't matter, I'll find something. In any event I'll then need about 450 grams of each colour, which about matches the blue yarn in my stash.

Und immer noch nicht sind wir fertig mit der Mathematik. Wenn ich jeden Faden nach jedem Streifen abschneide und neu ansetze, habe ich im günstigsten, also kleinsten Fall ohne neu ansetzen (das geht eh mit Russian Join) 630 Fäden. Das geht gar nicht! Also habe ich jetzt im ersten Patch diese Fäden einfach mitgeführt, jeweils in jeder zweiten Reihe verkreuzt und darauf geachtet, dass sich nichts zieht. Ist nur im mittleren Streifen etwas schwierig, weil da nach der Zunahme die Abnahme einen Winkel von 90° macht. Da muss man aufpassen. Außerdem werde ich mir das Muster vorher überlegen und versuchen, die Läppchen direkt anzustricken, wo das möglich ist. Dafür brauche ich ein genaues Bild, deshalb überhaupt nur gibts die vier Entwürfe.

And we're still not done with maths: If I cut the yarn after each stripe, I will have with the smallest number of patches 630 ends to darn in. No way! So I weaved in the unneeded strands  in every second row, paying attention that it doesn't pucker. This is a bit tricky in the middle stripe, since after the increase the decrease gives an angle of 90°. I'll have to pay attention to that. Also I will figure out the design before hand and try to attach the patches while knitting, wherever possible, so I won't have to sow them all together. Therefore I need a precise picture of what I'm doing. That's why there are the four designs.

Und ein letztes kleines, ziemlich frustrierendes Detail: Ich benötige grob gerechnet eine Stunde pro Patch, macht ohne Rand, vernähen und sowas 63 Stunden. Ich sollte aufhören, hier zu schreiben, und mich an die Arbeit machen! Gottseidank ist der Winter rum und ich kann mir Zeit lassen. Ich halte Euch auf dem Laufenden.

And one last, rather frustrating, detail: I need roughly an hour to knit one patch, so without darning in, edging and all that I'll need 63 hours for that. I should stop blogging here and get going! Thank God winter is most probably gone and I can take my time. I'll keep you posted.
