Granny-Decke und Fäden Vernähen | Granny Afghan and darning in ends

I've been asked a question: Isn't it annoying to have to darn in all those ends in an afghan that changes colour every other row?

Und wisst Ihr was? Ich mache das einfach nicht mehr.

I don't think so. But I think my excessive knitting in the last years has changed me in approaching that. Indeed I used to think it's awful to have to darn in those gazillions of ends at the end of a project. And you know what? I just don't do it any more.

What, I don't darn in ends in the end? A spotlight appears, haunts me on the big blog stage, carrying a huge speechbubble: "What a slapdash woman!". And I'm standing there with a slight smirk on my face.

The magic word here is "in the end". That is what I'm not doing any more. Of course every single end is darned in neatly, Ms Rink, the needlework-teacher of my youth and knitterly Überich, would send me bubonic plague otherwise. I just do it as I go. And there are several possibilities, admittedly a few more in knitting than crocheting (so far as my knowledge reaches), but all of them pretty neat.

1. If I knit with pure wool not treated with superwash, I felt the strands. I've shown here how to do this. That of course only works in cases where I have to attach a new ball. It doesn't work with colour change.

2. If  you use superwash-wool or other material which doesn't cling together well, a good solution is the so called "Russian Join". With this tag there are quite some videos on Youtube showing how to do this. It works great, if the yarn doesn't split (what happens e.g. with some rayon blends), and it won't come apart, if you are paranoid like me and Russian join the thing for about three inches. Best of all: This solution works also with colour changes.  A knitting buddy showed me that, who knitted this thing of wonder (Ravelry project). It goes like that: You knit to the seventh last stitch, Russian join the old and new colour for a bit more than 3 inches, knit the last six stitches. And if one stitch of the old row will be in the new colour or vice versa, no one will notice. Great that is, and works fabulously.

3. Another way to get rid of old and new ends when changing balls is to weave them in. I admit, I have a bit of an advantage here. I'm able (blessed be my sister teaching me this when I was a teenager) to knit effortlessly with two strands over one finger. This makes life very easy here. When I approach the point, where to change a ball, I simply take the new yarn over my finger too and knit alternately above and below this new strand with the old one. Thus the new strand is weaved in before I even knit with it. And I don't care for how long I do this, mostly it's around 4 inches. Then I change, take the new strand as working yarn and knit above and below the old strand until it's gone. If I did everything right, I'm by this stage not able any more to strand the old yarn over my hand, so I just hold it between the left thumb and index finger, until it is gone, which will also be around 4 inches (I'm a chicken, aren't I?!?).

This unfortuantely only works with stockinette stitch. In purl stitches the weaved strand will show on the right side and this looks untidy. However, this also works with colour changes in stockinette.

4. And if all this doesn't work like with this project, I'm stuck with darning in all ends every twelvesomething rows, which have occurred until then. This also works fine. If I have to darn in 20 ends, it's 10 minutes and Bob's your uncle. It won't show that I'm doing something boring, because it's done before I even think of it.

My aim is to have the last strand of yarn left to darn in at the end of every project. So all ends will be gotten rid of way before that, if possibe all buttonbands done, all buttons sowed on and all the rest of it. So there is that one single wonderful last strand between me and a new item.

And now, could we please, please get that slapdashery-spotlight ouf of my face? It's glaring at me and I get a headache.

Today is a dizzy day. Good weather to listen to books. While I usually cling to historic, documentary or biographical books, at present I'm head over heels in "beautiful novels". Can't get off it and so far have listened to some beautiful books.

Presently I'm listening to "Hundred Names" by Cecelia Ahern. I started several books of her, but none really gripped me. This did, it's beautiful, very contemplative and beautifully written. It's hard to give you a synopsis, since this might yet give away too much. So just a brief: A young journalist makes a huge mistake in a TV show. At the same time she's working for a monthly magazine. It's editor found her for writing. She gives her the idea for a story, but she dies before being able to explain, what's the gist of it. So Kitty, the journalist, finds 100 names and has two weeks to find out, what's with those names and write the centre piece for the commemorative edition for the editor. The book is about this journey. It's not dramatic or deeply sad or somehow other thrilling, just a wonderful journey with wonderful people and lots of stories. Deeply moving with beautifully drawn personalities.

Well, and while listening I'm crocheting. I've had the idea for a granny afghan for quite some while, I had started one with patches but soon realized, this effort was beyond me. So now I'm crocheting in the round, granny after granny after granny in lots of colours - eight in all. And I'm trying to avoid any sort of order, but just produce as vintage an afghan as possible. Listening to the story I completely forget everything, just crochet on. I'm at one third of the afghan, started yesterday. It will be heavy and beautiful and give warmth on a chilly evening in my little garden.

Ah, der Garten. Mein Rhododendron blüht und drunter ruht Rufus.  Manchmal kann das Leben einfach angenehm sein.

Alas, my garden. The rhododendrone is in blossom and underneath rests Rufus. Sometimes life is simply pleasant.

Verlagswechsel Vikant Crafts - OZ | No English, this is an information for the German market

Fleißig gewesen | Been busy

Today I was busy planting my garden. For normal people that's no big deal. For me it's another story. I'm 51 years old and never in my life have possessed a garden. Now I've got a tiny bit of soil with a monstrous rhododendron and a quite big rose on it together with a 15 square metres of terrace. So, as an old city gal I had to figure out something.

So, first the rhododendron. It still had the withered flowers from last year on it. I didn't know whether I  had to get rid of those. Reading about it being better, when they are off, so by the sweat of my brow and my quite limited height I picked them off. Unfortunately the rhododendron is considerably higher than me, so it's got a bit of brown hair on top.

Then I pulled out weeds (well, I didn't take a picture of this, weeds in, weeds out seemed a bit potty to me). It was quite a lot. I had to wait on the "Eisheilige" to pass. This is a German myth, five days of saints from 11 to 15 May, where the last frost may occur. It seems to be the equivalent to blackberry winter. Still, my weeds had decided somehow, that they would like to grow now and hard.

Then the actual plants. I got a rose for a birthday present and I planted this. There is still nothing really visible of course. The other plants went into flower pots, since there wouldn't be enough space within the flowerbed.

I like the idea of nibble gardens. Therein are fruits and vegetables, which you can eat directly from the bush as you are out there. I did that once on a balcony in my city flat - and as usual overdid it. That was the year I didn't have too much light in my living room, seeing as the balcony was one big tomato forest.

Diesmal habe ich wieder Tomaten gepflanzt. Vier Setzlinge in vier unterschiedlichen Sorten.

This time I again planted tomatoes. Four seedlings in four different kinds. They have exotic names like "red marble" "Phantasia" and others. All historic kinds, one yellow, one cherry tomato and all very robust.

Of course - it's me, we are talking about - there is a thinking error involved. If you buy kinds of tomatoes which will grow up to two metres, it is NOT sensible to buy trellises which are only 1,10m high. Well, maybe the upper part will just stay upright in itself, otherwise I will tie it to the fence.

Well, then there is a small bush called Wax Flower and a strawberry seedling and next week I'll buy a raspberry and maybe some other berrylike plant, then that was it.

Except for Rufus. He definitely had to become my new flatmate. He is lying there reminding me to cherish my life. I will do that. I'll have noodles with tomatoe sauce - not yet from my own tomatoes.

I like experimenting with buttonholes. These are fiendishly difficult to get right. Either I have to sow around them, because they are too sloppy, or the look awful, because they have strange bumps all over the place.

I don't like the two-row buttonholes at all, because they tend to get too sloppy and the buttons won't go through or virtually fall through, leaving the cardi constantly open.

That's why I tried several one-row buttonholes I found in the internet. Actually I liked the solution of Elizabeth Zimmermann, but once I didn't have the book with me, so I had to find an alternative.

And from this came my present favourite buttonhole. It's a bit laborious, but I won't have to sow anything, the pattern around it remains visible, and it is firm enough to let a button through and keep it there.

Und das geht so: | And that's how it goes:

Knit to the first buttonhole in pattern (k2p2 in my case).

Slip first stitch, put yarn from front to back and let it go (For reasons to show I put the stitch back on the left needle; that is not necessary).

Slip second stitch, lift first stitch over second and off the needle, slip third stitch, lift second stitch over third and off the needle, repeat until the required number of stitches is cast off.

Arbeit wenden.
Turn the last stitch and put it back on left needle. Also turn last stitch on right needle. Turn work.

Now pick up working yarn, insert right needle into the back part of the stitch and purl, put this stitch on left needle. Insert left needle into the back part of the just created stitch and purl, put this stitch on left needle. Repeat this until you have one more stitch than cast off.

Arbeit wenden.
Now turn all new stitches and the last old stitch, so the right part of the stitches is in front of the needle. Turn work again.

Now knit the next two stitches together in pattern.

Fertig | Done.

So, I think, this looks really, really good. It's a bit fiddly, but it's worth it, because there is nothing sloppy, the corners are nice and firm.

Neiman or "Winter into Spring" is done. I blocked it on the weekend and wore it today. It feels great, fits perfectly and is beautiful and spring-coloured. And it's by far shinier than the pictures tell (I might have mentioned that I'm not very good at taking pictures, right?).

The last bit of stockinette bored me to tears. Not once, twice it bored me, since my first attempt was much too big. It got interesting again with the hem and changing to this shiny red. I didn't cast off the hem, but went through a quite refined procedure. I had three goals:

1. I didn't want the hem to pucker.
2. It shouldn't fold upwards.
3. Grafting gazillions of stitches should only be necessary once.

So I dabbled around with needle sizes. First at the beginning of the hem I got rid of 10% of stitches (k8, k2tog) using a size 4 needle (not cubics, since cubics of the same size are narrower than the round ones). In this row I did a sort of red lifeline to mark the row, where to attach the live stitches.

Then I knitted the neccessary number of rounds in green and three rounds in red with size 4 cubics. After that I changed to size 1.5 round needles purling one round and knitting the neccessary rounds for the inside of the hem. Due to the smaller needle size I needed a few more rounds on the inside. For the safety of it (goal N°2) I knitted one row less than neccessary on the inside, since I had the grafting row as an additional row (this I figured out, it worked fine, but I have no clue if my thought are correct here).

However, in the end I took a needle size 0 and took up the upper part of the stitches in the marked row. Well, and then it was *as if to knit, as if to purl, as if to purl, as if to knit, repeat from asterisk for seemingly 785,397 times (I had a really good audiobook!), darn in end. Of course on my grafting path I controlled endlessly if the hem might fold after all (goal N° 3 has worked out exactly never on the first goal after all so far) and done I was. It did work out, the hem looks good and isn't sloppy anywhere.

So sweater N° 6 of my 13 for 2013 project is done. And fun it was.

Lasst Farbe herein | Let colour in

Oh, it's two weeks since I posted anything. Seems to become my rhythm, although I would like to get back  here  more often. Still, this time it's colours! After having finally switched off the heating (thank God and all her saints and helpers), this is more than appropriate.

At the moment I'm running a programme to knit up stash yarn. This seems to evolve into a Wollmeise stash yarn knit up strategy. Neiman, a beautiful pattern from Knitty, does have an altered version. The knitting colleague started top-down with a round yoke and proceded with a raglan. I liked the idea, so I adopted it. My own attempt at this some time ago was a complete failure, so I was happy to be able to cling to a calculated version.

My colours (I don't know the names) are seagreen, bluelilac and sparkling red, the latter just enough to be tolerable for me. Usually I'm no red-type at all.

Knitting is fast, even though the yarn is quite thin and endless stockinette stitch is quite mind-numbing to me. I've made it a habit to read while knitting, so I don't see the slow, but steady progress and forget myself in the story.

I love the idea to knit just a few rows in contrasting yarn at the hem. It gives the thing a bit of additional kick. I accessorized this effect by knitting a few rows before the hem in green, which is just a shade darker.

This time I didn't knit three sleeves for once, but my first attempt at the body was so wide, this wasn't near a tunic, but more like a tent. So of all I had to reddo the stockinette-desert. Well, I caught up again (two hours of commute do help) and will now get back for  the final parts.

When I thought I would have to toss the sweater to the naughty corner due to its huge size, I started another Wollmeise sweater. Again somebody infected me with the idea, and again I'm facing miles of stockinette. It's the pattern "dark and stormy", a cardigan with a bit of cabling at the back and lots of plain knitting.

The picture doesn't even come close to the colour. It is a beautiful bachelor's button blue. I'm knitting with one thread Merino 100% in the colour "Kornblume" and one thread with Lace in "Lapislazuli". The result is intense, but beautifully intense and not just gaudy.

Wieder dreifache Mikrofaser bunt in jede Menge Stäbchen verwandelt.

Well, and to reinforce the colour thing, my bath rug is done. Again three threads of microfibre turned into lots and lots of single crochets.

One of my next posts will be a report on all the books I've listened to or read during my knitting binge. Some of them really are wonderful. I won't tell you more. For now.
