Übungs-Fair Isle und was ich gelernt habe | Practise Fair Isle and what I learnt from it

So, mein Übungs-Fair Isle ist fertig. Mir gefällt er gut. Grade trocknet er auf meinem neuen Pullispannbrett, hergestellt aus Rohren nach dieser Anleitung. Ich bin ja momentan schon ziemlich fleißig mit diesem ganzen Kram, richtig? Nunja, jedenfalls trocknet er gerade.

Well, my Practise Fair Isle is done. I like it a lot. Its presently blocking on my new wolly board, built of plastic tubes following this instruction (in German). I feel being pretty busy at the moment with this sort of stuff, right? Well, anyway, it's drying at the moment.

Ich habe zwar inzwischen schon zwei weitere Fair-Isles gestrickt und trotzdem ziemlich viel von dieser Arbeit gelernt:

Although I have knitted two more Fair Isles in the meantime, this practise thing taught me quite a lot:

1. Es empfiehlt sich sehr, Farben, wenn selbst zusammengestellt immer am PC oder auf Papier vorzuzeichnen, sonst wird das nix. Auch sollte man sich ein bisschen mit Farblehre auskennen und wissen, welche Übergänge zwischen den Farbschattierungen gehen und welche nicht. Das Mittelmuster ist in seiner Zeichnung nicht zu erkennen und im Original kommt das besonders klar heraus. Hier gibt es ein Beispiel, meins zeigt nicht einen Bruchteil des Musters.

1. If one uses colours and yarn different from the pattern, it is recommendable to draw out the pattern, either in PC or in papier. Also it is advisable to have some basic knowledge of colours in order to know, which colour changes between the shades work out and which don't. The shape of the smaller main pattern is hardly visible, whereas it is especially precise in the original. This picture shows an example, mine doesn't show half as much of the pattern.

2. Ich mag Fair Isle total gerne. Einerseits ist es sehr spannend zu stricken, andererseits ist es glatt rechts mit zwei Fäden und geht deshalb ziemlich rasch, wenn das mit Fadenhaltung und -spannung gut funktioniert.

2. I love knitting Fair Isle. It is thrilling to knit and on the other side it is plain stockinette stitch with two colours and therefore works out really fast, if there is a suitable way to hold the two yarns.

3.  Ich mag diese Rippenbündchen nicht sonderlich. Abgesehen davon, dass das mit den linken Maschen anstrengend ist, tendiert die Anschlag- oder Abkettreihe dazu, sich zu rollen. Beim Hillswick Lumber werde ich vielleicht mal die "purl when you can" Lösung von Meg Swansen ausprobieren. Das ist eine Technik, nach der alle Maschen links gestrickt werden, die auf eine gleichfarbige Masche in der Vorreihe folgen. Das soll Rollen verhindern. Ich habe das bei dem Medallioncardigan gemacht (bei mir heißt er Tapetenmantel), aber dort waren es nur so 10-15 Maschen.Mal schauen, ob das geht.

3. I don't like this corrugated rib very much. Purling with two colours can be quite exhausting. Also cast on and cast off tend to curl. With the Hillswick Lumber, one of my next projects, I will try to figure out a different solution. Maybe "purl when you can" by Meg Swansen. This is a technique where you purl all those stitches, which follow a stitch of the same colour in the previous row. This is should prevent curling. I used it in the Medallion cardigan successfully, but then there were only about ten or fifteen stitches. We'll see, whether this works out.

4. Zu dickes Garn macht einen sehr, sehr warmen Pulli. Das Ding wird nur etwas für wirklich kalte Tage und ansonsten ein Outdoor-Pulli.

4. Too fat yarn for Fair Isle makes a very, very warm sweater. This thing will be suitable only for very cold days, else it is an outdoor-sweater.

5.  Das mit der Fadenspannung verändert sich. An den Ärmeln hab ich veritabel eine Masche weniger auf 10cm. Angefangen habe ich ihn ja als erstes "richtiges" Fair-Isle-Projekt. Damals hatte ich noch eine lockerere Fadenspannung, inzwischen bin ich mutiger, was Fäden Anziehen angeht, weil mir das Ergebnis so viel besser gefällt. Aus diesem Grund werde ich die Maschenprobe bei meinem nächsten Projekt nicht überspringen, obwohl ich auf jeden Fall ein Garn verwenden werde, das ich dafür schon im Einsatz hatte.

5. The tension thing changes.  Working the sleeves I had one solid stitch less to four inches. I started it last year as my first "real" Fair Isle project. Then my tension was fairly loose, now I'm much more courageous knitting tighter, as the result pleases me much more. But anyway I won't skip the gauge swatch with my next project, even though I'll  have knitted the yarn before.

6. Fair Isle Spannen ist ungefähr so wichtig wie Tücher spannen. Wenn wir zu dem oben genannten etwas verunglückten Mittelmuster zurückkommen und uns die ungespannte Variante anschauen, wissen wir, wieso ...

6. Blocking in Fair Isle is about as important as blocking lace. If we get back to the slightly misshapen blocked middle-pattern and take a look at the unblocked thing, we know, why ...

Nunja, ein Pullover mehr und er gefällt mir trotz allem sehr gut. Jetzt gibts als nächsten einen bürotauglichen Pulli, Catherine Parr hat ein Drittel des zweiten Ärmels und ich bin fest entschlossen, den Pulli am Montag zu tragen.

Well, it's another sweater and I like it despite all the constraints. The next will be a sweater suitable for the office, I've done one third of the second sleeve of Catherine Parr and I'm determined to wear it next Monday.
