Lang nichts gesehen | Long time no see

Having been quiet here for a bit. I'm fine, there just some logistical issues in place. I'll give you a small selection of those:

1. If something is finished, I have to block it. That doesn't work in both my living spaces., just in one of them

2. If something is finished and blocked, I have to take pictures. In order to do this, finished object and camera will have to be in the same place, so I won't have to offer you dodgy mobile pictures.

3. If something is finished and blocked and camera and finished objects are in the same place, I need good light and a clean, undisguised surrounding.

4. If something is finished and blocked, camera and finished objects in the same place, the weather is fine and the surrounding fits, I have to feel like wanting to do that.

You see there are a lot of obstacles in the way from finished object to displaying said object here in the blog. That means neither, that I'm not knitting, nor that there is anything preventing me from blogging. Apart from logistics, of course.

Gute Voraussetzungen also.
This entry's series of pictures was notably inspired by the muses: not only N° 1 to 4 were given, there was even a model being willing to display four finished shawls - four very warm finished shawls - in bright sunshine and not only to hold them, but also to wear them. Great preconditions, I tell you!

My four finished shawls are very, very different. They all have a particular story to go with them:

1. Garden View Stole:

I started this shawl quite some time ago. I saw the pattern at Ravelry and instantly thought this would be great for chilly evenings in my little garden. Usually I never knit something in dusky pink, but for my little refuge the colour combination is just perfect.

The pattern contains just a triangle. But I don't like straight triangles very much any more. So I just added third "half" triangle and thus have a huge stole. Fits perfectly on my shoulder and I really like it.

2. Old Shale Stole:

I've knitted this shawl a long time ago, it was more than a year. I couldn't look at it during that time, because it connects me to a very intensive and sad time of my life. I knitted this shawl, while a person near and dear to me was dieing. Five days we were with him and in this time I knitted the shawl. Now this connection doesn't hurt any more, but it is now near to me. And I do like the oldfashioned form and pattern.

There is no pattern for this, I figured it out as I went. It's a Faroese form and - unlike the traditional knitting - knitted from the top down. There is also shoulder shaping, fits fine. I used cashmere for this and it feels amazing.

3. South Bay Shawlette:

I'm quite sure this must be my fifth South Bay Shawlette. This one's a bit special: My first South Bay Shawlette was out of Noro and I loved wearing it. Once I was in office and met a friend, who was over the moon about this shawl. So I just gave it to her (I like doing that sometimes). She was really touched by this little gift. But now I didn't have one any more, so I made myself another one. We'll see, how long this will last with me.

4. Brandywine:

This little kerchief was a complete accident. I bought the yarn with the intention to knit something with dropped stitches. On the go I found out, I really, really do not like stuff with dropped stitches, neither knitting nor wearing. So I reclaimed the yarn and just picked a pattern I had purchased ages ago, but never came round actually knitting a version of it. It will make a nice little something when hiking and needing something at the neck in a chilly wind.

Granny 2 fertig | Granny 2 done

There's not much to see in the picture, but anyway, this is my second finished blanket this year. Granny Squares, this time in stripes, not rounds, repeating two rows per colour, taking two shades of one colour interspersed by two rows of blue.

I started intending to have a development in shades, but I didn't like that, because the repeats would have been wide and few. They're wide and few here also, but that doesn't show in this design. What I did is to take the shades of blue and turquoise and interspersed them with the shades of red and rose. I think, this way the blanket has a little more alternation and depth.

The last bit was challenging. Not only did I have to darn in around 160 ends, I also needed two rows of edging. I did those last night during a thunder-storm, otherwise I would have sweltered. There's way more than 30°C here. The good news is, my alpaca-stash is definitely diminishing.  For the record: I started out with 11 kilos, now I'm at quite precisely eight kilos.

The next blanket will be a design called Jacob's Ladder. This fascinates me: You alternate 10dc with around 10ch. This gives a rather dense cloth interspersed by the chain spaces. The special thing is that in the end you take those chains and make a chain ladder into the cloth and thereby closing the gap. This gives the thing a whole new look. I love it!

This time I won't take two strands, since the last blanket is quite heavy. I think I'll do this in greys, interspersed by leftovers from blanket N° 2 and other colours. This should be fun.

Decke fertig | Afghan done

That was a shortish fun. My afghan lasted two weeks to be finished (give and take a few days, where I wasn't able to work at it). I like it a lot, it has the charms of elderly 1970ies. You can't see, but the thing is HUGE, 53.5x81''. And it's heavy, almost three kilograms.

Now give it a good wash and it will serve me as a summer blanket, the weather now being so warm.

Warum ist das so schnell gegangen? Keine Ahnung.

Why did this go so fast? No idea. I think it's this metitative repetition together with an interesting and perky audio book (well, or several of those). And it's two threads, which make the pace really quick. And it's the choices of colour: I didn't plan ahead, simply chose a new colour as I went. There was one simple rule: Don't do anything regular seeming to be a pattern repeat.

All this made me forget the here and now, I simply wasn't there at times, burried under this humongous piece  of crochet. Okay, the last ends (in the end it was six instead of one after all) were a bit of a mess, because it really grew hot under the blanket due to the weather radically getting warmer. But I rarely have done a project so in one go as this. I lie, it were in fact three of them this year, this one, Livstykketroje and Dark and Stormy, at the latter of which I will have to redo the button bands, since they're plain and simply ugly.

I guess I'm in a sort of meditative phase. My days start with half an hour of Qi Gong, then I water my plants and watch my beautiful rhododendron wither, after that I'm awake, in good mood, a bit worked out and able to cherish my coffee. It's been a long time since I felt so at peace with myself. I can't tell you how much I cherish that!

So I started a similarly repetitive, but not quite so big project out of the last remnants of the microfibre. It will be covers for my garden chairs, also crocheted with two threads, so the things will be comfy for a summerly derriere on a plastic chair. The project again involves a lot of ends to darn in. I'll keep you posted.

Neiman or "Winter into Spring" is done. I blocked it on the weekend and wore it today. It feels great, fits perfectly and is beautiful and spring-coloured. And it's by far shinier than the pictures tell (I might have mentioned that I'm not very good at taking pictures, right?).

The last bit of stockinette bored me to tears. Not once, twice it bored me, since my first attempt was much too big. It got interesting again with the hem and changing to this shiny red. I didn't cast off the hem, but went through a quite refined procedure. I had three goals:

1. I didn't want the hem to pucker.
2. It shouldn't fold upwards.
3. Grafting gazillions of stitches should only be necessary once.

So I dabbled around with needle sizes. First at the beginning of the hem I got rid of 10% of stitches (k8, k2tog) using a size 4 needle (not cubics, since cubics of the same size are narrower than the round ones). In this row I did a sort of red lifeline to mark the row, where to attach the live stitches.

Then I knitted the neccessary number of rounds in green and three rounds in red with size 4 cubics. After that I changed to size 1.5 round needles purling one round and knitting the neccessary rounds for the inside of the hem. Due to the smaller needle size I needed a few more rounds on the inside. For the safety of it (goal N°2) I knitted one row less than neccessary on the inside, since I had the grafting row as an additional row (this I figured out, it worked fine, but I have no clue if my thought are correct here).

However, in the end I took a needle size 0 and took up the upper part of the stitches in the marked row. Well, and then it was *as if to knit, as if to purl, as if to purl, as if to knit, repeat from asterisk for seemingly 785,397 times (I had a really good audiobook!), darn in end. Of course on my grafting path I controlled endlessly if the hem might fold after all (goal N° 3 has worked out exactly never on the first goal after all so far) and done I was. It did work out, the hem looks good and isn't sloppy anywhere.

So sweater N° 6 of my 13 for 2013 project is done. And fun it was.

Lasst Farbe herein | Let colour in

Oh, it's two weeks since I posted anything. Seems to become my rhythm, although I would like to get back  here  more often. Still, this time it's colours! After having finally switched off the heating (thank God and all her saints and helpers), this is more than appropriate.

At the moment I'm running a programme to knit up stash yarn. This seems to evolve into a Wollmeise stash yarn knit up strategy. Neiman, a beautiful pattern from Knitty, does have an altered version. The knitting colleague started top-down with a round yoke and proceded with a raglan. I liked the idea, so I adopted it. My own attempt at this some time ago was a complete failure, so I was happy to be able to cling to a calculated version.

My colours (I don't know the names) are seagreen, bluelilac and sparkling red, the latter just enough to be tolerable for me. Usually I'm no red-type at all.

Knitting is fast, even though the yarn is quite thin and endless stockinette stitch is quite mind-numbing to me. I've made it a habit to read while knitting, so I don't see the slow, but steady progress and forget myself in the story.

I love the idea to knit just a few rows in contrasting yarn at the hem. It gives the thing a bit of additional kick. I accessorized this effect by knitting a few rows before the hem in green, which is just a shade darker.

This time I didn't knit three sleeves for once, but my first attempt at the body was so wide, this wasn't near a tunic, but more like a tent. So of all I had to reddo the stockinette-desert. Well, I caught up again (two hours of commute do help) and will now get back for  the final parts.

When I thought I would have to toss the sweater to the naughty corner due to its huge size, I started another Wollmeise sweater. Again somebody infected me with the idea, and again I'm facing miles of stockinette. It's the pattern "dark and stormy", a cardigan with a bit of cabling at the back and lots of plain knitting.

The picture doesn't even come close to the colour. It is a beautiful bachelor's button blue. I'm knitting with one thread Merino 100% in the colour "Kornblume" and one thread with Lace in "Lapislazuli". The result is intense, but beautifully intense and not just gaudy.

Wieder dreifache Mikrofaser bunt in jede Menge Stäbchen verwandelt.

Well, and to reinforce the colour thing, my bath rug is done. Again three threads of microfibre turned into lots and lots of single crochets.

One of my next posts will be a report on all the books I've listened to or read during my knitting binge. Some of them really are wonderful. I won't tell you more. For now.

Neue Garderobe | New wardrobe

At present I'm gloriously on holidays. I've used the time giving myself to a big huge knitting overflow listening to tons of books and keeping my trap shut, which is what this time is for. This is loads of fun and therefore I'm frightfully efficient, having finished three new sweaters. Two are for spring, the cardigan will come into its own next winter.

I talked in my last post about the pullunder and the cardigan and their tricks to cook a snook at me, showing rather dodgy pictures. Now they are both finished, still not blocked, but the pictures are at least better.

The pullunder is a product out of my own head. It consists mainly of three patterns: moss stitch at the yoke, garter stitch as a transition and a lace pattern called "Streifenwanzen und Schleier" from "Omas Strickgeheimnisse" (on page 94, if anybody is interested). I didn't want a picot edging this time, so I just picked up stitches and purled a few rows.

I took another picture of a little detail: I wanted the pullunder to flare out a wee bit. So I started with a few stitches in moss stich under the arms (with one knit tbl stitch at each end) and picked up two stitches right and left of it in every pattern repeat of the lace pattern. On the picture it looks a bit distorted. This will improve once the thing is properly blocked.

Federleicht also.

So far I haven't talked about the third sweater. Last year I received for my birthday beautiful yarn from my Strickcafé. It's Lang Seta Tweed. The stuff knits up as difficult as Rowan Summer Tweed. It even smells similarly. But in the end the effort is worth it, since I love the result. And never in my life I've possessed a sweater (hand-knitted at any rate), which weighs 11.5 oz. It's a feather weight.

My choice for a pattern is the sweater version of Leaving by Anne Hanson. I had attempted this with another yarn, but that wouldn't fit. It's perfect with this yarn.

The pattern is very well written, well designed, good to follow and with the world's biggest range of sizes (12 or something like that). Still it's easy to follow and I love the result. In reality it doesn't look like a dress as it does in the picture.

Eventually I started another sweater (I found that okay after having finished three). It will be for a family member. She wanted a bicoloured patterned sweater, something like Norway or Faroe from "Fishermen's Sweaters" by Alice Starmore. However I wasn't too fond of the red stripe in Norway and the pattern combination of Faroe. So I'm knitting Faroe with the main pattern from Norway.

It will be made from Holst Samarkand. It's a woll-silk-blend. Yardage is 314 yards for 1.76 oz, quite tiny in all. First I was thinking of knitting with two strands, but that would be very warm indeed and I didn't like the result seeming a bit chunky. So I'm knitting single-stranded, which basically means taking needle size 0 (sigh).

The usual corrugated rib doesn't work with this yarn, it curls upwards. After some false starts I knitted a hem instead with a hopefully fitting pattern to the main pattern. This shows, how much more loose I knit stranded: The inner hem in unicolour has 24 rows, the outer hem has 19 rows.

| So this is me beginning a new journey.

Fertiges | Finished objects

Today I've got two posts for you, one would be too long (I can't believe I of all people would write that ...)

Zunächst habe ich zwei Sachen fertig | The first deals with two finished objects:

The first is an old debt: I owe you the picture of my finished Livstykketroje. Unfortunately it's a bit contorted since I don't have the right contraption here for doing it justice. I like it a lot, wear it quite often. It's a bit unusual, since it by no means has the measurements of healthy positive ease usual for my knitting style, but has no ease. But with this style that is perfect.

The yarn is Wollmeise, colour Single Malt in two strands of Lace. This wears well. Usually I don't hold with that kind of superwash yarn, but it is perfect for this design, since it may be blocked to gauge, but keeps a life of its own.

The second finished object is the baby blanket. It still needs blocking, so there is a first glimpse of the thing. I just knitted square from the middle and inserted some whimsical lace blossoms. A garter stitch knitted on border, it will be The border is garter stitch, measurement will be blocked around 45''. I think it goes well with cardi and shoes.

Kleine Spielerei | Bit of playing around

First the good news (for me at any rate): I'm much better! Slowly my energy is returning. I'm still suspicious about these antibiotics, but they help beyond any doubt.

Then I needed a small project. Somehow I wasn't keen on knitting bigger stuff. So I pulled out some beautiful yarn from the stash, I had purchased some while ago for myself. Unfortunately I had to admit, this colour (blue with purple-pink) doesn't suit me at all. So as the people around me tend to get pregnant, I decided to knit some baby stuff.

The cardigan is the February Baby Jacket from Elizabeth Zimmermann's "Knitter's Almanach". Great pattern, easy to follow, fits the yarn perfectly (I believe). The booties are the Saartje's Bootees, I used the seamless version of Fleegle. The also go perfectly with the cute cardi.

The not all that small project to go with these is a baby blanket, also from Knitter's Almanach. It's at the point of finishing, therefore it's not in the picture. At present all you could see would be a big pile of blue-purple-pink knitting in progress.

I think I'll do that more frequently now. Baby stuff is adorable and knitted quickly, I'll use up some stash and if I get news of another baby to come, I won't have to knit like crazy, but will be able to dive into my gift box to find something that fits in colour, form and style to the family expecting a new offspring.

Mütze und Teppich fertig | Hat and rug done

Boy, this was a challenge! I like the cap, but I really had to make an effort for this. Well, not me in person, but me in shoulders and fingers. The part knitting around was the simplest compared to the rest. I did everything at least twice until I liked it. The shield was frogged twice until it looked good. Call it "Windsbraut's daftness". At one point the shield had dimensions that would have helped me being a sign post for space travellers. And again I made the radically creative experience that it helps a lot to read the instructions thoroughly.

Of course, like always, I was innovative. Mostly it worked out, but in the present (almost last) version I had the bright idea to add buttons. Well, and place those in a way that they sit at the ears. Were this not a very decent blog I would have to use foul language in order to describe the looks of this solution.

But it is done. And it adorned my head in various stages of completion almost the whole day today. It's really, really comfy.

Oh, and I finished my "not a bath-rug"-rug. It will be nice in my vestibule. It's heavy - 900 grams of microfibre - and a bit sloppy ends darned in (I will have a do-over of that). And it will receive a bottom made of waxed cloth (the ones for kitchen tables), then it will go into use.

But now I will have to crochet a bath-rug, having had the bright idea to measure the space available this time. It was fun to crochet and I think I've never worked 900 grams so rapidly.

This is a neat thing. I'm counting my stash down and here every stitch counts for three, since I crochted with three strands. It's not a big deal, though, warm feet are more important.

Very often ships are called windsbride. The speed with the wind at high sea, nothing will stop them, a world of freedom and adventures. If the wind turns, they turn. That's me. Well, I leave out the gag with the battleship and my appearance, turning in the wind somehow fits better.

Did I decide to stay away from yarn purchases? Did I decide to knit one project at a time? Did I - swift as the wind - knit four fifth of a cardigan and just have half a sleeve to go? Did I? Did I? Did I?

Alas, and now this. A fellow knitter cast on a beautiful hat. Really gorgeous. Pattern called Newsboy. My most favourite yarn dealer had the perfect yarn in perfect colour and exactly the neccessary number of skeins for me. And I cast it on. Beautiful pattern, looks great. The yarn knits up perfect, in the meantime I changed from magic loop to eight (in words: eight) dpns, since the pattern (something with alternate slip stitches) is so tight, that you're hardly able to move the stitches. Now I have 800 metres more yarn, a really hard to knit project. And what next? What does our silly little Windsbride?

Casts on for a crochet rug with 3 strands of microfibre. It's beautiful, single crochet throughtout, three colours, needle size 6mm, will be beautiful in my entry. A real stash-buster. The 800 metres are compensated, my cardigan has exactly no progress and the hat is just lying there doing nothing, desiring to become a hat, but it's exhausting.

Thank goodness I have two finished objects to show, since otherwise I would have to feel thoroughly ashamed of my fickleness.

The first of those has been done for ages. That is Catkin with two Wollmeise-yarns (whatever the colournames are). It just lacked blocking and buttons. Both is now done. The second pattern was a bit demanding, you had to pay close attention not to miss the spot where you were. As a reward the third part was fun and interesting. With the slip stitches you had to pay attention to make the carries long enough so it wouldn't pucker. The size given is a bit small, but it wears well, especially with the buttons on the shoulder, and makes a boring sweater interesting.

The second one was my first blunder from the cardigan. There was a mention of the pattern Seven Circles in a discussion on Ravelry. I remembered that I had wanted to knit this for ages, so I did. It's made out of Noro, and it's really simple: Just knit a circle, cast of almost all the stitches, cast on a few more or less stitches, knit a second circle and so on. Makes seven single circles attatched by some 20 stitches and a warm neck. Noro was no fun to knit as always, but it wears well (I'm not squeamish at scratchy yarn on naked skin).

So, I'm going on knitting the hat! And then I'll finish the cardigan - hopefully.

Der Zauber des Spannens | The magic of blocking

My last post showed you a shrivelled bit of knitting. This unshrivelled now. To this day it fascinates me, how such a bit of knitted bumps and kinks suddenly blooms into a wonderful bit of patterned knitting.

And I not even blocked it the widest possible. I wasn't able to do that since the beds here are just 150cm wide.

Now I'm very much looking forward to creeping under this thing of wonder for tonight's knitting!

Fertigmachitis | Finishitupitis

January seems to be a good time to finish up things. I'm doing that and others do so too. Since I not only "received" tons of yarn last year, but also started jillions of projects, this was the time to stop and have a good look to what is there. And I found a few things, which I finished up now, others are to be done soon, some projects are frogged. One of those is a cardigan, the yarn of which I bought on Guernsey, it is named Guernsey and it will be a Guernsey cardigan. I figured the pattern out for myself, but it didn't properly fit, I didn't have the right needle size with me, so it was bullet-proof knitting in size 2.5 where a size 6 would have been much more appropriate. So it went into nothing, which is to say everything, together with some other projects. The yarn is wound neatly and went back to a zippered bag and will wait until I can give it my full attention in terms of planning. And I will give it that, promise!

At the same time during holidays I took a trip through the times. Partly sad, partly interesting, partly, well, full of thoughts and memories. So this will be my topic now.

Staying in the now-time: One of my bigger yarn purchases were 500 grams of Lang Novena. A beautiful and soft yarn blend of alpaca, wool and a bit nylon. It is so soft, I don't think it's suitable for a sweater, so these wee 20 balls wanted to become a shawl. A big square shaw, which would serve as a laprug when properly blocked. I first had Spire in mind and started it as that, but then I realized I would have to make yarn-overs in every row, so I skipped the plan and made the lace up myself with the goal in mind to use up as much of this yarn as possible. Then I knitted and suddenly there were 800 stitches that wanted to be knitted of with a lace edging. So this vanished for a bit, but then I pulled myself together and finished it. I will be able to knit myself some fingerless mittens with the leftovers, I used up 400 grams, and the shawl is HUGE. Before blocking the edges are 1.30m long.

Let's go back a few years, shall we? In 2010 I started a cardigan or be it a coat out of Drops Alaska. The pattern is also from Drops and the thing is again HUGE.

Out of no reasons at all I dropped knitting this for more than a year until last October I took it up again. Then I dropped it to the naughty corner, since the sleeves had about 1.000 feet. Now I ripped those out and did them properly.

The cardi has sleeves within the sleeves, I like those, of course roomy pockets and a good length. Maybe I'll ad an additional facing for a zipper underneath the buttons and maybe I'll line it, so it won't grow too huge (I've got the idea from the great book Custom Fit Knit Jackets by Jean Frost, she's quilting the lining to the knitted fabric, which I find fascinating). I like it a lot and it fits well.

Again two years earlier I bought some yarn in the internet. From Ireland. I don't do this usually, I've got my favourite local yarn store, where I find everything I need (and much more, like a wonderful knitting café, friendly people and a very cozy atmosphere). The thing came in huge skeins, 250 grams each (the needle on the picture is 8'' long). With this I almost ruined my first ball winder. Of course I didn't buy just one or two skeins, no, it had to be four skeins each in three colours, which is three sweaters' worth. When going through my stash I had those in my hands and I couldn't help it but begin a project with them. And as always I didn't take the beautiful blue, this will have to become something very special. The cardigan will be orange, the pattern is Saint Denis Cardigan, adding pockets in double knitting. Boy, I used some very choice expletives, it was really an effort! But it was worth it, they're hardly visible. I'm looking forward to this, even though the yarn is quite - well - robust, if not scratchy.

Finally we'll go on a wider time travel, back to the 1990ies. Of course I knitted then also. Among others for my father. When clearing up I found this cardigan. It's very old and a bit worn down. This was my favourite way of knitting jackets: simple sleeve, a pattern that required nothing but plain knitting (it's moss stitch), of course pockets (my father wouldn't wear cardigans without pockets), a cozy collar and good strong yarn. I never used a pattern, just took the measurements and started. The yarn is some blend of wool and acrylics, I also found three leftover skeins, which may become something also. I can't wash the cardi yet, it still smells of my father's aftershave. So it will lie here a bit until it's washed and will be worn again.

Back in the present I still have some stuff lying around, which I would like to finish. There are gloves with open fingers, knitted from the top and with an added cap piece for mittens. These are nearly done, I knitted those to try out a new technique. A Pamuya shawl also needs little more knitting in order to adorn my neck. Then I'm knitting another Pi-Are-Square, in a colour which desperately calls for overdyeing. A red cardigan is blocked and needs buttons. I feel very busy and according to plan I will knit as much of the yarn in the stash as at all possible. I'll need new yarn for one project, that's for the next generation. But before that I'll have to get rid of 10.000 meters of stash yarn. Well, I'll go on having fun with what I'm doing.

With pride and joy I may announce the birth of St. Brigid. On this occasion I would like to thank my parents, that they gave me not only a lot of dim-wittedness, but also stamina and just enough brains to get this thing across the finish-line after all. Also I have to thank Rowan for having made it's Felted Tweed so sturdy, that it survived a lot of ripping out without the slightest damage.

It started with me carrying"Tudor Roses" by Alice Starmore with me when paying a visit to wonderful relatives. Somebody saw it and wanted a sweater out of it.

Don't worry, you're right. Neither was one of the Tudor-Henries married to a woman of that name, nor were they in any kinsmanlike relation to St. Brigid (at least so far as I know). The lady was an Irish abbess in the 5. century and is an Irish patron saint.

So how came this astounding coincidence? Well, here we throw in some of my dim-wittedness. I started as always: Take the measurements of her favourite sweater, copied them into my knitting diary and started the wanted sweater. Several times. Again and again. I got gauge, the sweater was too wide. Finally I landed myself with needle size 0, calculated thoroughly and trudged along through this rather unintuitive pattern.

About at the point of the sleeve openings I realized something was wrong. My giftee would never, ever fit into this narrow tube. The thing was too tight. Much too tight. Very much too tight. Unfortunately the measurements fitted exactly to what I had written down in my diary.

I left the thing in the naughty corner. Quite some time I left it there. Precisely spoken I had reached the sleeve openings around this time last year and I couldn't bring myself to go on with it, since there was something quite wrong. Then some time later I gave my flat a thorough clearing up and declattering session. On this occasion I found the original sheet of paper I had written down the measurements.

Fool that I was I had ignored the bust measurement and just copied the measurements for waist and shoulders into my diary. No wonder this thing wouldn't fit.

I was a little traumatised after this seventh attempt. And I would rather have eaten the entire red Felted Tweed in my possession than starting the same pattern an eighth time. So I went through my books of Ms Starmore and finally settled on St. Brigid.

Immediately the fates changed: gauge, casting on, sweater a bit bigger than favourite sweater, which is very good, since favourite sweater rather thin, this one due to the cables quite thick. I  had a lot of ideas to knit the yoke in the round. But in the end I didn't want any more experiments, but knit the thing home safely.

Therefore there is no set-in sleeve, I even sewed on the sleeves. Need I mention that this sweater has three sleeves like all my other sweaters? The first version would have caused a blood stasis in her hand. I definitely didn't want to do that to the recipient.

My last effort day before yesterday was the neck opening. The cable is knitted as a single band of around 55cm length, which is then sewn to the body. Then you pick up stitches for the ribbing. My 55cm would have given the sweater a nice bit of ruffles. Not that I wouldn't have been able to see that before I pick up the stitches for the ribbing. No, I did pick them up, I did do the ribbing and I even did darn in all ends (which made ripping it out a lot harder than neccessary).

Well, in the end I made it all new and nice and proper. Directly after having darned in the ends I threw the thing into the sink in order to prevent me from undertaking more attempts to do something to it (of course this was after having checked that there is no more ruffles at the neck).

So now it's done, my project of doom. I have to say, I never was angry or used filthy language when some attempt didn't work out again. I just didn't look at it for a while or ripped it out and started over.

And still I don't think the recipient is obliged to appreciate the "WORK" in the project. I just hope she likes it as a pretty new sweater. And I will refrain for a while from taking on difficult commissions like this. For quite some while. Well, only after I will have done my next commission: another complex Starmore-sweater for a very dear person in my life. I've got the measurements in my diary already. The correct measurements.
