Shetland I: Überblick | Overview

Well, the time comes to take stock of my adventures in Shetland. Of course I have loads of pictures and things to tell, too many for one blog post. So this is the beginning of several posts. A lot of it is mainly atmospheric or theme-related, not so much chronological. There is a huge lot to see, even Mainland has so many faces. Very often I simply forgot to take pictures being busy just looking. So this is a rather patchwork-like report. I decided to go back, and not just in order to fill some of the white patches.

What can I tell about these islands? Well, they are big. Much bigger than you reckon when seing the little specks on the map. Mainland is the fifth largest island of the United Kingdom, following Great Britain, Ireland, Lewis/Harris and Skye. I was on Yell, Unst and Mainland and drove some 1000 kilometres in my two weeks and I hiked quite a bit.

Reisen geht langsam in Shetland.

Travelling is slow in Shetland. There is a motorway from South to North and another about from Lerwick to the West. These two roads, A970 and 971, have two tracks, all other roads are singletracks with cute little pass by bits (believe it or not, I drove by endless signs saying what they're called, but I simply forgot the word). So, if a car comes, you drive into one of those things, wait until he or she passes, then you greet friendly and go on. Maximum speed is 50mph on the motorways, else it is wise to drive appropriately slow.

Well, left-hand driving was a bit of an adventure for me. The last time I did that is some 30 years ago and I couldn't recall, how awkward it felt to change gears with your left hand. Roundabouts, passing by, turn left or right, all that was no trouble at all. But the third and fourth gear constantly hid from me, so that mainly in the first evening my car made the deep putputting sound of too low-speed driving or the shriek of too high-speed driving. Well, I confess, there's also not a very pleasant sound, when you try to reach the fourth gear and accidentally try to hit the reverse. It happend twice to me, wasn't pretty. Next time I'll go for an automatic, but I got used to it in the end.

Lerwick, my homestation and the capital of Shetland, is a nice little town with a harbour and surrounding hills or mountains. It has beautiful old houses, a cute pedestrian area, a harbour, where once a week a huge ferry from Norway arrives, which looks as if it would like to take along the whole city. I strolled through the town a lot, simply because I liked it so much. In my last evening I found a spot, where at last I was able to take a picture that shows a good part of Lerwick.

In Lerwick are two museums I visited, the Shetland Museum and Archive and the Shetland Textile Museum. But more about that in a later post.

What more is there to tell about this spot generally? Well, the weather is, let's say, interesting. I knew that there is the saying, Shetland has all four seasons – every day. The first two days I thought, not nice place, rains constantly. The landscape was dimmed and somehow grey. Then the weather brightened up, i.e. there wasn't just daily rain, but also daily sunshine. Then the island is suddenly warm and beautiful and full of colours. So my best friend was the weather forecast, me not being able to „read“ the weather up there. Changes come quick, one minute you have a beautifully blue sky, five minutes later you have to rapidly get your rain coat on (mine's called the body condom) and try not to be near the cliffs, since rain and wind usually come together. So I more often than not drove through beautiful rainbows and felt very tiny in this weather confusion.

Well, something else has stuck with me from this journey: Shetland is dangerous, my friends, very dangerous. At least for me. Okay, I'm not totally serious about that, but I did have some tricky situations:
  • If you tread into a rabbit hole, you fall over. If you hike through a rabbit settling, you fall over several times. Usually the second fall makes your trousers filthy.
  • If you hike through green grass, your feet will get wet, because usually green grass means bog or fen underneath. And if you don't pay attention, there will also be wet socks, because there is a hole underneath the wet stuff. I didn't fall over there. Fortunately.
  • There are no hiking trails. This basically means, you pick a spot to hike and just go ahead, not protected, but just as you like. So I went close to some cliffs, along hillslopes, where last year I would have panicked, went detours, because there grased some sheep flock, which I didn't want to disturb. Basically it is allowed to go through private property, where there are sheep, but I'm some chicken and didn't want, well, to draw attention to myself.
  • Anywhere I went to sightsee, Clickimin, Jarlshof, Scalloway Castle, Ald-Lunna-Kirk and what not, there were always spots, which were too high up for me to reach. Stairs, small trails without a handrail, grashills, which draw up softly showing you a steep down suddenly, stuff like that, all the time! So hiking and visiting places was about as slow as driving, and quite exhausting. It's okay to go up, but in some spots I went down backwards in order not to have to look the terror in the face. But I didn't duck out, that's a very, very good news (at this point a huge thank you and greets to my clinic, I didn't do the high ropes course for nothing, my friends!).

So, after the somewhat rainy start I felt very well there, although at some places I missed the one bank or other for me to just take a rest and knit a bit.

Später mehr.
More to come later.

Wo bin ich wohl? | Where am I?

It is wet, it is dark, it throws about the biggest amount of rain at me, which I have ever experienced after hardly two minutes of warning.

The place is called Esha Ness (or Eshaness, I've seen it with both spellings) means in Norse volcanic headland. It's in the Northwest of Mainland Shetland. There are some very, very beautiful coastlines (more about that later). That was my first excursion, which very rapidly turned into an incursion, when I got soaking wet within three minutes. And this, although I had thought I had worn enough protective clothing. That was rubbish, the amount of rain per square milimeter Nanika simply was too much.

But it was beautiful there, even though I nearly was blown over the edge of the cliff in my two minutes outside the car. Therefore I definitely wanted to return.

Nun, heute wars soweit. Und welch ein Unterschied!

Well, today was the day for it. What a difference!

I made this picture at the exact same spot as the waterripple-picture above. I even parked my car at the same spot! Aren't those colours beautiful? These cliffs, the very special blue of the sea, this red and green grass (the corresponding colour of Jamieson Spindrift will make an appearance later), all very bright - and wet on the floor, it seems to be a bog or something. I didn't care, shoes can be cleaned, trousers can be washed.

There's even a bank here, just like in Pembroke on Guernsey. Here as there my special place is in the Northeast of the island, here we there the weather is rougher than elsewhere, although pembroke doesn't have these huge clifflines. After the last three days, when there was truly horrible weather and I was practically celestially forced to browse at a certain spinning mill (have you ever been at the core of a spinning mill? No? Well, I have, even if by accident; looks great all those threads coming together), this was sheer bliss for my soul.

Jawohl.

I went hiking. There are no trails here, so you just walk along the coast. I could have just stood there taking pictures, but I went about half the coastline on this side, before it got darker again and I was reminded of my "no warning at all" experience two days ago. Still, there are bogs, sometimes you have to hop over a little brook, sometimes you don't watch out and you stand right at the edge of a cliff. Well, I didn't do my exposition therapy against my fear of heights for nothing. If just for today the effort was worth it. Yes, the edge is half a metre away and again yes, that indeed is my foot. Definitely.

Well, and now the yarn. Of course I purchased so far way more than I had intended. Nevertheless I purchased all orders and gave myself some really beautiful stuff.

First (I'll write a blog post about this shortly) Hazel Tindall tipped me off that J+S has a new type of yarn: Shetland Heritage. It has about the size of the 2-ply Jumperweight, but it's much smoother. There are not yet too many colours, I purchased some of them. I need a hat, but my first attempt went dismally wrong, so there's no picture yet. Also I bought undyed Supreme Jumperweight in five shaedes. Beautiful stuff, a bit thicker than 2-ply, and unfortunately also still without a picture yet.

Then I decided to buy yarn for two Fair Isles. One of those is Roscalie by Alice Starmore, but not straight up, but straight down. The other is made up by myself. Well, Roscalie comes in two colour versions. I decided on Version 1 and bought Version 2, daft me. That was the chance incident where I came to see the inside of the spinning mill, before I went north. This gave me also the opportunity to meet the owner of Jamieson's. Very friendly woman, she got as excited as myself when picking the colours for the Roscalie. We decided together, what it will be. This is the result:

links nach rechts, right to left: Yellow Ocre, Sunrise, Bracken, Moss, Atlantic

When I chose the second colourway, I knew I would like to knit a Fair Isle with only the main colour changing. I chose a very dark green as contrasting colour, that's something I like a lot at the moment.

So this is what it will look like (some of you my know the pattern, is the one of my Fake Isle; still don't know whether this will be the one, it was near me aka I was wearing the cardi when I did the swatch):

von oben gegen den Uhrzeigersinn: counterclowise from the top: Bottle, Autum, Burnt Ochre, Paprika, Leprechaun, Moorgrass

The sequence of colours in the swatch is not yet correct, but I did it and I can calculate the thing. It will be a cardigan top-down. And I intend to make a fine trick I adopted of Uta: At every change of colours I take a strand from the old yarn and one from the new yarn and split-splice them together about six stitches from the end. At the front these double-colour strands will be in the steek, at the sleeves they will be under the arm. Et voilá, no ends to darn in, no carpetfringe inside the garment and life is beautiful! Great idea, thanks, Uta!

Also los gehts.

I still have nothing to show knitwise (I haven't got all my knitting projects with me and I do not like the light of my hotel room enough to take the pictures there). Still, here is another random collection of what I see here. There is no special order, (except for the date) just a bit to watch and hopefully cherish. So here we go.

First we are on a little stroll around St. Martin and St. Peter Port. If you go to St. Peter Port from St. Martin, you can either take the cliff walk (wheeze stairs up and down) or you cut the "detour" through Jerbourg and walk through a small settlement. There you are able to find little treasures like this door. Better even, the whole house is amazing, but I wasn't able to take it with my limited abilities to take pictures.

Also on this way there is an assortment of the most amazing gardens. I didn't take a picture of the one with the approximately 327 garden gnomes (I didn't count them), it was a bit too much. But this garden is wonderful, very cultivated and still something I would long to spend a whole day in.

This assortment of street names is of special importance for those who read and loved "The Guernsey Literary and Potatoe Peel Pie Society". Our little strolls leads through exactly that part of St. Martin, where the Guernsey people of this story live.

Then there it is, Guernseys most beautiful view (at this trip, at any rate). It is taken from the cliff pass above Fermain Bay, the little island in the distance is Herm. Visiting Fermain Bay is quite hard, steeply downhill and uphill on the other side. There are no shortcuts, no parking places, nothing but good feet and enough breath. But it's worth it, every step!

My last but one picture for today is the view the other way round: looking at St. Peter Port from the sea. Unfortunately it was a bit cloudy that day and the picture is not terribly focussed, but that's how the darling looks from the Sea on the way to Herm.

The end of our trip today is a small, insignificant butterfly, sitting quietly on some surface. It was there for half an hour in front of my lense. I thought it was at the end of its days (or hours), but suddenly it flew up in the air and vanished together with another butterfly, which seemed to have waited for it in the trees. I loved it!

Disclaimer: These pictures have not been changed, it's exactly, what I saw through my lense. Not that I'm terribly good at reworking pictures, but just in case.

Frag mich, was ich heute gemacht hab | Ask me what I did today

This is were I went up. And not just this, but also lots of other stairs which were made definitely for people larger than me. To be precise, until this minute I walked today 17973 steps (my aim of the day were 8.000 steps, since I feel so exhausted). If you calculate an average of 70cm per stride, this makes about 12.5km , which are about 7.7 miles. That's nice, isn't it? And I'm not tired or something like that. I feel more exhilarated. By the way I wasn't hiking on my one. This was really fun, I hadn't thought that would work out, but it did perfectly!

Dennoch natürlich gibt es kein Treppenbild ohne Pausenzeichen. Das ist irgendwie biologisch in mir angelegt ...

Still, there is no picture of stairs without an interval sign. It's biological, it's not my fault.

Mal wieder unterwegs | On the road again

To be precise I'm on my way back home. This time it's not holidays and thus a four day intercontinental trip. I don't have something like this very often. Having just started to get out my jet-lag time is going backwards again. It's exhausting, but rich, full  of impressions and new people talking in a language I haven't used for almost fifteen years. But apparently you don't really loose languages, thank God!

Knitwise the time on trips is really a productive one. I'm now in posession of intercontinental socks. It's the pair I proved with that you're allowed to knit in planes. This pair was developed in two continents, an island and a subcontinent. I started knitting these socks while flying to Egypt about in February 2010. It was a bad idea, the pattern was daft, knitting was daft, the yarn somehow was daft too (some elastic sock-yarn of Regia). I knitted this sock until the end of the trip and then ripped it out. After that there was an almost year-long break with elastic socks.

I gave the yarn a second chance on Guernsey. I had found a pattern I liked and thought fit for the yarn, the Earl Grey by Stephanie Pearl McPhee, which I had used for the socks of a colleague. On my trip home from Guernsey I finished the first sock and as usual immediately cast on the second. But then I lost my liking for knitting socks temporarily.

Now this was perfect: First I tried knitting a Pamuya-shawl but I had to concentrate too hard for it. So I retrieved Sock N°2 from my knitting bag and knitted it during conference breaks. Was a fast knit, much faster than I had expected. I will wear them during the flight tonight and cast on the next pair. We'll see, where my next trip goes to. Maybe I should store socks for such ocasions, which I only knit on trips and therefore get the opportunity to really see a lot of this world.

There will be pictures as soon as I'm back with my camera.

Ha! Funkioniert! | Yess! Works out well!

Last night I re-did the edging of the Summertweed-Cardigan. My first attempt was much too big. And being at it I added a crochet border and buttons. I like that a lot and it fits well. Now knitting two three-quarter-length sleeves and I have a new cardigan which looks quite elegant after all. Isn't knitting great!

Schockierende und andere Ereignisse | Shocking and other events

Today I had an objective, yes I did. To be precise there were even more and some developed in the (almost literal) going. First of all I wanted to get over the seemingly 1000 rows of plain stockinette stitch in order to be able to nicely and decently knit a sleeve during flights and on airports. They were supposed to be 14 cm.

My second aim was the same as every day, walk 10.000 steps. This I overachieved.

Then my aim was Fresia Centre. I went there, bought some gifts for those at home, went again. I was intending to buy some seedlings, but I made up my mind not to seing those bulbs and reading the information that they could be used for several years. I'm not terribly gardenish so I didn't want to do unnice things to those sweet plants
.

After the Fresia Centre I didn't know quite well where to go to. So I thought, why not Grandes Roques? With my luck this year I'll miss the bus wherever by minutes and will be able to knit comfortably and - of course - quickly my 1000 rows of thrilling stockinette. So I went.

On my way there I found something typical for Guernsey, which I withheld until now to my most estimated readers: selling booths (for want of a better word). Those things are great. You can find them in parking places, garden walls, street corners, bus stops. There is some kind of display, you can read the price of the items on its side, inside there are shelves and somewhere a slit for the money. This time it was flowers, but there can also be eggs, bread, fruit or vegetable. So if somebody is shopping for the weekend, he or she is going to those booths and gets whatever they need. You're trusted to pay what's said on the thing.Well, my landlady told me in the meantime that this system is not going too well, so it might be abandoned soon.

Back to the story: Walking to Grandes Rocques I had my 10.000 daily steps done. And right in one, the bus had left 10 minutes ago. Because studying the bus schedule I found my new destination: Saumarez Park, there my knitting was most efficiently last year. So I sat on the bench beside the bus stop and knitted happily away, twelve rows in the end.

Then we (my sweater and I) went to Saumarez Park (the bus was on time and drove me there all alone - except for my sweater). There I found my bench. But I was shocked, really shocked! Some eight weeks ago I posted some pictures of my beloved Guernsey. One of those I had christened "Finbrethil" since the tree looked like an Ent. I hadn't noticed that it had a blue marking at its bottom. And now this! Finbrethil decapitated, yet in September marked for slaughter!

There I gave this wonderful late tree a minute's silence and was happy that I will keep it in memory for quite some time. Then I knitted again. Of course I immediately had to take a picture, now at row 15

And one of the whole sweater, and do please tell me that it is not pink!!

Saumarez Park was bustling with people, mainly kids directly from school wearing all kinds of school uniforms. They ran around screaming. Well, I thought that's okay, I needed something to tear my mind from stockinette stitch. Later on two women came with their kids. One of these kids looked suspicously at the front of its trousers. The mother reacted instantly: "No, not weewee, not weewee" and pulled out the biggest potty you can imagine, undressed the child and sat it on it. When it had done what it had to do, he was enthusiastically praised. Honestly, I have no idea where this woman kept that "potty", it was humongous.

Seufz.

Well and in the end I had proudly presented 32 rows. And a black knitting hole. The measurement taken before starting the stockinette desert said I had to knit 14cm to get 63cm length. Now I've knitted 12cm and the thing is 58cm long. Miracle upon miracle and this basically means I'll have to do another 12 rows until I can finish the body. And I don't want to repeat the feather and fan, so it will be 10 rows of garter stitch. Sigh.

Bild des Tages | Image of the Day

Today I was finally at La Corbiere. It was a bit of a walk since one of the roads is blocked so you will have to walk through streets until you can reach the coastal walk way.

Wet Paint = Frisch gestrichen.

And somehow my stay this time seems to be  a bit ill-fated: Not only "my" bank at Pembrooks hosts a tent full of adolescents and on the other side, in Ladies' Bay there was a cart race on my birthday of all days. Not only, that I way lying in bed yesterday coughing, sneezing and with a terrible hedache. No today I reached one of my favourite places on the island, La Corbiere, and was intending to at least spend half a day on the benches there. What did I find? A sign saying "Wet Paint".

Fortunately there is another bench a bit further towards the sea. I was a bit scared last time to get there, but today I was determined to find a place to stay. And there I was, and well rewarded I was with this sight.

Was ich heute gelernt habe | Things I've learnt today

| Even the smallest island has a lake. Here it is the reservoir at St. Saviour's.

|  My phone makes brighter colours than my camera (well, the two pictures are taken at different spots, maybe I'll try it at the same spot tomorrow). No clue why, still it can't do the zoom trick.

| If a walk is to be "easy to moderate" this doesn't mean there are no steep ways up or down.

| If you step into sludge, your shoes will get dirty. If you wipe the sludge off in the gras immediately, they are absolutely clean afterwards.

You can get lost on this island and not land at Grandes Rocques. Today it was La Perenelle - and I had no clue, whether this might be the spot where the bus doesn't come at present, since one road is blocked. It's like that here, you never see a sign, you just have to ask. That's absolutely okay, you get acquainted with people. Today the lady was very friendly. However she looked at me a bit strange, so I will go to a hairdresser tomorrow. Hope it won't be the Prince Ironheart-thing again.

Und ganz wichtig | And - very important:

| If you would like the neck opening narrower, it doesn't do to narrow down the back neck to under 5cm. It won't be narrow, but ugly. I didn't take a picture.

Bilder des Tages | Images of the Day

| The first image comes masked and without any comment whatsoever.

The second picture are really two pictures. I had to wait for about half an hour for a bus to come. There was nothing special apart from those two absolutely different images of the sky. The bright blue is North, the clouded is south. The street is one of the main roads of the island in the West.

Oh, and I've knitted a bit (this is not the Images of the Day section any more). It's a Buttercup and it's not half as pink as it seems in the picture.

Bild des Tages | Image of the Day

Heute habe ich zwei Bilder des Tages | Today there are two pictures of the Day:

1. Die Herrin von Guernsey | The Dame of Guernsey

Had I had the abilities and a decent picture processing programm, she would have received a face. To she remains untouched as photographed.

2. Die Katze in der Ecke | The Cat in the Corner

I found it when I got home. First I couldn't quite figure out front and back. It was sitting there absolutely relaxed in her corner, so she had to become my picture of the day - from me of all people!!

Wieder unterwegs | On the road again

When have I last sat at a window of a plane and took a picture while landing somewhere? I think, this happened last when I - 15 years old - returned from Ireland and took a picture of my home airport. Today I did it again. I immediately knew from which side we flew to Guernsey.

This time I'm staying at another corner. This I will have to learn to understand, since I wasn't here last year (that's why I picked it out). But I knew well the first part of the way. And of course I will visit my evening spot on the hill and all the places I can squeeze into the week. It is strange to me to feel so right somewhere else than home.
