Und weiter gehts | And on we go

Today was an incredible day. We had a lot of heat during the last days, about between 35 and 38 degrees Celsius in the shade. This had to lead to a huge thunderstorm. It was announced for the night, but it came around midday. This basically meant, that within about half an hour about the amount of rain of the last month came rushing down. Had I taken shampoo and shower gel, I would have been able to take a proper shower as usually in my bathroom. The rain had that much pressure.

Well, our office building didn't like that very much. Apparently the basement garage filled up with water and pressed it into the ground floor. I've never seen that before, the ground floor was full of huge puddles. We were evacuated in an emergence and had to go home, since there seemed to be a problem with the electric system. The rain had lessend, but the local traffic didn't work any more, the tubes were full of water also, and about the entire fire brigade were on the road on emergency calls.

So I was unexpectedly free for the afternoon. Well, I cleaned my flat. It's now a lot cooler and and much more pleasant. My garden got a bit ruffled, but it still is beatiful. After the rhododendrone the rosebush is now in blossom. It has a few lice, I disinfested it, but the blossoms are beautiful, deep red and soft and velvety. I don't dare to touch them.

Now again I am back under my alpaca blanket and will be able to go on crocheting that. I couldn't do that in the past days, I would have sweltered. It will be much colder towards the weekend. So the world's back to normal. I like that.

Decke fertig | Afghan done

That was a shortish fun. My afghan lasted two weeks to be finished (give and take a few days, where I wasn't able to work at it). I like it a lot, it has the charms of elderly 1970ies. You can't see, but the thing is HUGE, 53.5x81''. And it's heavy, almost three kilograms.

Now give it a good wash and it will serve me as a summer blanket, the weather now being so warm.

Warum ist das so schnell gegangen? Keine Ahnung.

Why did this go so fast? No idea. I think it's this metitative repetition together with an interesting and perky audio book (well, or several of those). And it's two threads, which make the pace really quick. And it's the choices of colour: I didn't plan ahead, simply chose a new colour as I went. There was one simple rule: Don't do anything regular seeming to be a pattern repeat.

All this made me forget the here and now, I simply wasn't there at times, burried under this humongous piece  of crochet. Okay, the last ends (in the end it was six instead of one after all) were a bit of a mess, because it really grew hot under the blanket due to the weather radically getting warmer. But I rarely have done a project so in one go as this. I lie, it were in fact three of them this year, this one, Livstykketroje and Dark and Stormy, at the latter of which I will have to redo the button bands, since they're plain and simply ugly.

I guess I'm in a sort of meditative phase. My days start with half an hour of Qi Gong, then I water my plants and watch my beautiful rhododendron wither, after that I'm awake, in good mood, a bit worked out and able to cherish my coffee. It's been a long time since I felt so at peace with myself. I can't tell you how much I cherish that!

So I started a similarly repetitive, but not quite so big project out of the last remnants of the microfibre. It will be covers for my garden chairs, also crocheted with two threads, so the things will be comfy for a summerly derriere on a plastic chair. The project again involves a lot of ends to darn in. I'll keep you posted.

Granny-Decke und Fäden Vernähen | Granny Afghan and darning in ends

I've been asked a question: Isn't it annoying to have to darn in all those ends in an afghan that changes colour every other row?

Und wisst Ihr was? Ich mache das einfach nicht mehr.

I don't think so. But I think my excessive knitting in the last years has changed me in approaching that. Indeed I used to think it's awful to have to darn in those gazillions of ends at the end of a project. And you know what? I just don't do it any more.

What, I don't darn in ends in the end? A spotlight appears, haunts me on the big blog stage, carrying a huge speechbubble: "What a slapdash woman!". And I'm standing there with a slight smirk on my face.

The magic word here is "in the end". That is what I'm not doing any more. Of course every single end is darned in neatly, Ms Rink, the needlework-teacher of my youth and knitterly Überich, would send me bubonic plague otherwise. I just do it as I go. And there are several possibilities, admittedly a few more in knitting than crocheting (so far as my knowledge reaches), but all of them pretty neat.

1. If I knit with pure wool not treated with superwash, I felt the strands. I've shown here how to do this. That of course only works in cases where I have to attach a new ball. It doesn't work with colour change.

2. If  you use superwash-wool or other material which doesn't cling together well, a good solution is the so called "Russian Join". With this tag there are quite some videos on Youtube showing how to do this. It works great, if the yarn doesn't split (what happens e.g. with some rayon blends), and it won't come apart, if you are paranoid like me and Russian join the thing for about three inches. Best of all: This solution works also with colour changes.  A knitting buddy showed me that, who knitted this thing of wonder (Ravelry project). It goes like that: You knit to the seventh last stitch, Russian join the old and new colour for a bit more than 3 inches, knit the last six stitches. And if one stitch of the old row will be in the new colour or vice versa, no one will notice. Great that is, and works fabulously.

3. Another way to get rid of old and new ends when changing balls is to weave them in. I admit, I have a bit of an advantage here. I'm able (blessed be my sister teaching me this when I was a teenager) to knit effortlessly with two strands over one finger. This makes life very easy here. When I approach the point, where to change a ball, I simply take the new yarn over my finger too and knit alternately above and below this new strand with the old one. Thus the new strand is weaved in before I even knit with it. And I don't care for how long I do this, mostly it's around 4 inches. Then I change, take the new strand as working yarn and knit above and below the old strand until it's gone. If I did everything right, I'm by this stage not able any more to strand the old yarn over my hand, so I just hold it between the left thumb and index finger, until it is gone, which will also be around 4 inches (I'm a chicken, aren't I?!?).

This unfortuantely only works with stockinette stitch. In purl stitches the weaved strand will show on the right side and this looks untidy. However, this also works with colour changes in stockinette.

4. And if all this doesn't work like with this project, I'm stuck with darning in all ends every twelvesomething rows, which have occurred until then. This also works fine. If I have to darn in 20 ends, it's 10 minutes and Bob's your uncle. It won't show that I'm doing something boring, because it's done before I even think of it.

My aim is to have the last strand of yarn left to darn in at the end of every project. So all ends will be gotten rid of way before that, if possibe all buttonbands done, all buttons sowed on and all the rest of it. So there is that one single wonderful last strand between me and a new item.

And now, could we please, please get that slapdashery-spotlight ouf of my face? It's glaring at me and I get a headache.

Today is a dizzy day. Good weather to listen to books. While I usually cling to historic, documentary or biographical books, at present I'm head over heels in "beautiful novels". Can't get off it and so far have listened to some beautiful books.

Presently I'm listening to "Hundred Names" by Cecelia Ahern. I started several books of her, but none really gripped me. This did, it's beautiful, very contemplative and beautifully written. It's hard to give you a synopsis, since this might yet give away too much. So just a brief: A young journalist makes a huge mistake in a TV show. At the same time she's working for a monthly magazine. It's editor found her for writing. She gives her the idea for a story, but she dies before being able to explain, what's the gist of it. So Kitty, the journalist, finds 100 names and has two weeks to find out, what's with those names and write the centre piece for the commemorative edition for the editor. The book is about this journey. It's not dramatic or deeply sad or somehow other thrilling, just a wonderful journey with wonderful people and lots of stories. Deeply moving with beautifully drawn personalities.

Well, and while listening I'm crocheting. I've had the idea for a granny afghan for quite some while, I had started one with patches but soon realized, this effort was beyond me. So now I'm crocheting in the round, granny after granny after granny in lots of colours - eight in all. And I'm trying to avoid any sort of order, but just produce as vintage an afghan as possible. Listening to the story I completely forget everything, just crochet on. I'm at one third of the afghan, started yesterday. It will be heavy and beautiful and give warmth on a chilly evening in my little garden.

Ah, der Garten. Mein Rhododendron blüht und drunter ruht Rufus.  Manchmal kann das Leben einfach angenehm sein.

Alas, my garden. The rhododendrone is in blossom and underneath rests Rufus. Sometimes life is simply pleasant.

Decke fertig | Blanket done

My blanket is done. I like it a lot, it will keep me warm in Winter and brings a bit of colour into my living-room. The speciality of the blanket is the pocket, which is attached to the blanket. The entire blanket can be tucked into the pocket, so it will be a sort of cushion. If that is not needed, the pocket makes an excellent pocket for warming the feet.

The pattern for the patches is quite simple:

chain 51 (pattern needs an uneven number of chains),turn

Row 1: sc in the third chain, (chain 1, leave out one chain, sc in the next chain) repeat until end, chain 2, turn.

Row 2: (sc in the space between two sc, chain 1) repeat until end, chain 2, turn.

Repeat row 2 until the patch is a square (about 45 rows)

I crocheted 52 patches. The blanket needed 48 patches, the last four were for the pocket. Then I crocheted one black row around all the patches in pattern using the exact same number of stitches for all the sides. I knitted these black edgings together in slip stitch. First I did the rows of six patches, then I attached those to each other. Afer that I did the same with the pockie and sowed this onto the back of the blanket (slip stitch would have been too bulky there). Finally I did the edging of the blanket in black and pattern until I ran out of yarn and done.

Achtung!

Attention! The pattern is much more flexible in length than in width. Therefore I was very attentive to put the patches together alternating lengthwise and laterally. This gives a bit of design, but most importantly the blanket is drawn equally to all sides.

I hid the ends in the edgings, so in the end there were not very many left to darn in.

Technische Details:

Technical Details:

Used: 2.6 kg sock yarn and merino superwash, each with two strands, therefore I used up 10km of yarn.

Needle size 4.5mm, which gives a quite dense fabric

Size: about 135x180cm or 54x72''. First I thought it was a bit short, but due to the pocket it's fine.
