Anfänge und Zwischenbericht / Beginnings and State of the Art Report

And again a week has passed and I proceeded a bit with my knitting. Not in one project, but in two. The Practise Fair Isle is cut and I started knitting the sleeve. I'm knitting it with two circular needles and this fiddling around with four tips was so annoying, that I put it away and bought a 150cm line, so I will be able to use one circular with a loop.

Still I took pictures while knitting a steek (those among us with a faint heart, DON'T look down now). You can see where I sewed and in the second picture a made a red loop around the ladder where to cut. Sowing would not have been necessary by the way, a crochet steek would have been absolutely enough. Still, this steek will hold now after all.

Well, the sleeve also contains two new design elements (my euphemism for thinking mistakes): I had to start with about four rows of the big pattern, this was required by the body length and I didn't give enough thought to the sleeve when I started the armholes. And in the little pattern I made a colour mistake. Since both is not very distracting (I believe), I just went on. My suggestion is that we look at it when it is done and we decide participatory afterwards, whether it is an acceptable design-element or whether I absolutely should have ripped this bit.

There is a second reason for the break of Practise Fair Isle. There will be the birthday of a friend of mine and I promised to knit a cardigan for her. She chose Dakota on the Side from "Knitted Jackets" by Cheryl Oberle. This thing is 122 cm wide in the smallest size and my friend's size is 36, so she would drown in the thing if I knitted it in the original size.

So first of all I took a much smaller yarn (Impression and Essential from Knitpicks, which both knit beautifully!!) and recalculated the whole thing. I like the pattern and the colours (which are much more briliant than the picture shows), but stocking stitch with three rows of slipped stitches in between is nothing I would call thrilling or challenging. So I'm knitting this mainly in the knitting café and the subway trains. Half of the back is done , two fronts, half a back and the sleeves still to do.

Well, and there is already a plan for the time after the Dakota, but this is so crazy, that the laptop cringes while I'm writing this: I am participating in the Ravelympics (Ravelry-Link), which means to start and finish a project during the Olympic Winter Games in February. Now I'm thinking about doing a Fair Isle project in needle size 2.5. My idea is to knit Roscalie (not the vest, but the cardigan version) from Alice Starmore. Talking about challenge: Size 48, a pattern which changes throughout the sweater, thin yarn, 17 days time not having holidays. Pretty far out there, but I think I won't be able to resist the challenge.
