Probelappen? / Swatch?

Wieso mache ich eine Maschenprobe? Ist klar, oder? Die mache ich, damit ich ausrechnen kann, wieviele Maschen und Reihen ich für 10 cm kriege. Damit ich das ganz sicher weiß, mache ich bei einem Fairisle-Auftrag einen großen Probelappen, den schneide ich dann sogar noch auf, damit ich ganz sicher bin, dass ich richtig gemessen habe.

Die Aufgabe für dieses Wochenende lautete: Rechne Deinen Fairisle-Auftrag aus, schlag ihn an und strick ein Stück.

Habe ich gemacht. Kann mir nun bitte jemand sagen, warum da jetzt 54 und nicht 51 steht? Und warum da, richtig ausgemessen, eigentlich 55 steht? Meine Maschenprobe ist 17 cm breit! Und wieso - sagts mir, liebe Leser/innen - stimmt die Reihenzahl auf 10 cm exakt mit der Maschenprobe überein, obwohl ich nur ungefähr sieben Zentimeter hoch gestrickt habe?

Warum zum Kuckuck mache ich eine Maschenprobe, wenn die dann doch nicht stimmt ?!? Und kann mir jemand sagen, wie ich bitte knapp 70 Reihen Fairisle mit Shetlandwolle so aufribble, dass ich das Zeug hinterher noch gescheit verwenden kann? Ich bin ja manchmal wirklich duldsam, aber hier würde ich schon gerne meinen Kopf auf die Tischplatte dreschen. Also Wirklich!

Okay, ich geh dann mal mein Werk von gestern und heute vernichten. Hmpf.

Why do I knit a swatch? Well, that's obvious, isn't it: I knit it in order to be able to calculate, how many stitches and rows I will get for four inches. In order to be absolutely safe with my fairisle-order, I knit a big swatch, cut it open, so I'm really, really sure it's big and precise enough.

My task for the weekend was: Calculate your fairisle-assignment, cast it on and knit a good piece of it.

This I did. So will somebody please be able to tell me, why the lower picture shows 54 and not 51 as ordered? And why, precisely measured, this shows even 55? My swatch is about 7.5 inches wide! And why - please tell me, dear reader - does the row-gauge fits exactly to the swatch, although I knitted it only three inches high?

Why on earth do I knit a swatch, if it isn't correct after all?!? And can somebody please tell me how to frog almost 70 rows worth of Fairisle made of Shetland yarn so it will be reusable afterwards? I'm a quite indulgent person, but at the moment I really would like to bang my head on the desk. Honestly!

Well, I guess I had better go demolish my work of this weekend. Hmph!
