Ärmel fertig / Sleeves done

So, nun gibts auch Ärmel für die Jacke. Heute hats Spaß gemacht. Und ich gestehe, jetzt möchte ich die 15 Kilo für 2009 voll kriegen.

Jetzt muss ich das Ganze noch zerschneiden und Bündchen dran machen. Diesmal nehme ich nicht die Nähmaschine, sondern häkle die Kanten. Müsste mit diesem Garn funktionieren. Alles in allem ist das nämlich vornehmlich ein vorbereitender Versuch für "richtiges" Fair Isle und da möchte ich alle Techniken mal ausprobiert haben. Wenn der Versuch funktioniert, wird das natürlich auch eine schöne Jacke, klar oder?

Well, now there are the sleeves for the cardigan. It was fun today. And I have to admit, now I want to get the 15 kilograms done for 2009.

Now I'll have to cut the whole thing and put cuffs and wristbands on. This time I won't sow the steeks, but crochet them. It should work out with this yarn. All in all this is after all a preparatory test for "real" Fair Isle and I would like to try all the techniques required. If the test works out, I will have a beautiful new cardigan, isn't it?

Oh, und seit heute gibt es eine Neuerung im windsbräutlichen Haushalt: Sobald ich die Bude umgebaut habe, gibts jetzt ein Handarbeits-, Musik-, Gästezimmer. Ein Mitbewohner ist ausgezogen (gut so) und das Zimmer ist jetzt meins. Auch deshalb muss ich die Jacke schnell fertig machen, denn ab morgen ist Umbau und Möbel Kaufen angesagt. Nicht viel, ich brauche einen Kleiderschrank und später noch ein Zweisitzersofa.

Oh, and since today there is a novelty in the household of Windsbraut: As soon as I will have rearranged the flat, I'll have a handicraft, music and guest room. One of my flatmates moved out today (very fine for me) and his room is now mine. That's another reason for finishing the cardigan quite soon, from tomorrow on my time is reserved for backfitting and buying furniture. Not much, I just need a wardrobe and later on a double-seat sofa.

Und gestern habe ich noch gelernt, dass "Steek" kein englischer Ausdruck ist, sondern nur auf den Shetland Inseln existiert. Insofern gibts auch keinen deutschen Ausdruck. Ich hatte danach gesucht, aber irgendwie nix gefunden. Ist ja eine Art Nahtzugabe, vielleicht sollte ich das Nicht-Strickern gegenüber so nennen.

And yesterday I learned that "steek" is no English term, but just exists on the Shetland Islands. So there is no German expression for that. I had been looking for it, but couldn't find any. To me it seems like a sort of seam allowance, so maybe I should call it that when talking to non-knitters.

Gier oder Trance? / Greed or Trance?

Irgendwie ist Fake-Fair-Isle stricken schön. Man fängt an und strickt sich in einen Rausch, der in den Regenbogenfarben badet. Abgesehen davon, dass ich um ein Haar heute den Zug hierher verpasst hätte, weil ich unbedingt das große Teil noch fertig machen wollte, habe ich das große Teil tatsächlich fertig gemacht. Anfangen am 24.12., fertiggestellt heute, am 27.12. Waren ja auch nur rechte Maschen. Mit meiner bewährten Zwei-Farben-Methode ging das irgendwie ziemlich schnell mit Erzählen, ein bisschen Fernsehen (wirklich nur sehr wenig, ich weiß jetzt wieder, warum ich keinen Fernseher habe), rumsitzen und dieser Musterfolge beim Entwickeln zuschauen. Unglaublich, ich sags Euch, das war wirklich Spaß.

Übrigens ist in der Idee, die Garne umwickeln zu müssen, ein Denkfehler. Denn wenn man zwei Spiralen in unterschiedliche Richtungen spiralt, müssen sie sich auf jeden Fall irgendwo treffen - und das ist dann gleiche Farbe im Zwei-Farben-Muster und damit dusslig. Gottseidank sind diese Knäule voller Knoten und Musterdrehungen gewesen, so dass ich nicht zuviel zurückwickeln musste. Im Zug heute beim Ärmelanfang (beide zusammen mit zwei Steeks dazwischen, damit sie dieselbe Farbfolge bekommen) hats mich erwischt. Ist ein wunderbarer Spaß, wenn ein Haufen Nichtstricker einem beim Jagen nach dem Knäuel zuguckt und sich das Lachen verbeißt. Dankeschön auch, Frau Nanika, für die brillante Idee, alle Knäule dann schon vorher umzuwickeln, um sie dann im unpassendsten Moment wieder zurückwickeln zu müssen.

Aber immerhin, mit dieser Strickorgie habe ich meine 15 Kilo verarbeitete Wolle für dieses Jahr voll. War jetzt nicht meine Absicht, ich finde, 14,5 Kilo ist schon heftig genug. Immerhin hat alles, was ich verschenkt habe, zumindest nach erster Reaktion den Geschmack der Beschenkten getroffen. Insofern hat sich das Ganze gelohnt - nicht eingerechnet die Tatsache, dass ich mir selbst bis auf eine Ausnahme (der Pullunder ist ein bisschen kurz und eng geworden) lauter passende Teile gebastelt habe. Ich klopfe auf Holz, dass dieses noch etwas amorphe, versteekte Gebilde namens Kauni-Jacke auch was geworden sein wird. Ist nämlich ziemlich schön, finde ich.

Somehow I like knitting Fake-Fair-Isle. You start and somehow you knit yourself into a sort of frenzy bathing in rainbow colours. Apart from nearly having missed the train this morning, because I wanted to finish the body part of the cardigan, I did finish the body part of the cardigan. Started on December 24, finished today, December 27. It was all knit anyway. With my tried and tested technique of two-strand-knitting it was fast to do while talking, watching a bit of TV (not really very much, I know again now why I haven't got a TV set), hanging around watching this pattern unfold. Unbelievable, I tell you, that was real fun.

By the way, the idea of winding the balls into the other direction includes an error in thinking. If you take two spirals in opposite directions they will have to meet - and that is two-stranded-knitting in one colour and in this a bit dim-witted. Thank god my special skeins of kauni contained quite a few knots and changes of colour direction so I didn't have to rewind too much. Anyway today in the train starting the sleeves (knitted together with two steeks in between, so they will have the same colour sequence) it caught me. It is quite fun when non-knitters try not to laugh watching you as you chase your skein - for the watchers anyway. Thanks a bunch, Madame Nanika, for the brillant idea to rewind all balls beforehand and to have to rewind them again later in the most unappropriate moment.

Anyway, with this knitting festival I finished my 15 kg knitted wool this year. This wasn't my purpose, honestly, I think 14.5 kg is absolutely enough. Still all the presents I gave seem at least at first glance to have pleased the people I gave them to. So it was well worth the effort, not to mention that apart from one exception (a pullunder which is too short and tight) I received a lot of wonderfully fitting new garments. I knock on wood however, that this sort of amorph steeked something called Kauni-Cardigan will be another fitting garment. I do like it, you know.

Weihnachtswerkstatt fast geschlossen / Christmas Workshop almost closed

Nur noch den Schal meines Neffen fertigstellen und die Geschenkewerkstube ist für dieses Jahr geschlossen.

Und ehrlich gesagt laufe ich seit gestern rum wie ein legiges Huhn und überlege, welches meiner wunderbaren Garne ich als nächstes verstricke (okay, zusätzlich zu den mehreren Paaren Socken, die ich diversen Menschen schulde). Ich habe zur Auswahl:

• Lett Lopi in wunderbarem Petrol mit Rost als Kontrastfarbe für eine Norwegerjacke
• Grüne Shetlandwolle für einen Gansey
• Eine wunderbare zweifarbige Jacke von Meg Swansen aus Drops Alpaca Classic
• Regenbogenkauni für eine Fake-Fair-Isle-Jacke

Die ersten beiden scheitern daran, dass ich eigentlich noch nicht so recht das Muster weiß und mir nicht grade im Zug ausdenken möchte, welches Schweinderl es dann sein soll. Die dritte Wahl funktioniert nicht, weil ich die mit jemand zusammen stricken möchte und es blöd ist, wenn ich da jetzt schon anfange, wo meine Mitstrickerin noch nichtmal die Wolle hat.

Bleibt also Regenbogenkauni, da weiß ich das Muster, zwar noch nicht die Maschenprobe, aber das kriege ich natürlich hin. Und knapp die Hälfte der Kauni muss ich umwickeln, damit sich der Farbverlauf umkehrt. Da muss ich noch ein bisschen rumdenken, aber ich hab ja die Stola und kann den Farbverlauf sehen und so planen, dass sich die beiden Farben nicht treffen.

Das mit dem Umwickeln hat übrigens noch einen weiteren Effekt: Kauniknäule haben ja wie alle Knäule in ihrer Natur, dass sie jeweils gleich aussehen. Wenn ich also die eine "Farbe" umwickle, sind das schlicht unterschiedliche Knäule und ich kann so besser Farbe 1 und Farbe 2 auseinander halten.

Da ich mich heute in den Weihnachtsurlaub verabschiede, bleibt mir nur noch, Euch allen da draußen wundervolle Weihnachten zu wünschen. Und wir sehen uns bald wieder in diesem Theater.

I've just got to finish the scarf for my nephew and the present workshop will be closed for this year. So since about yesterday I'm strolling around thinking which of my beautiful yarns will be next for knitting (okay, there's sone pairs of socks left I promised some people). My choices are:

• Lett Lopi in beautiful turqoise with some brown as contrast colour for a Norwegian cardigan
• Green Shetland for a Gansey
• A wonderful two-coloured cardigan of Meg Swansen's with Drops Alpaca Classic
• Rainbow-Kauni for a Fake-Fair-Isle cardigan

The first two won't work, because I still don't know the pattern and don't want to figure that out in the train. The third option doesn't work because I want to knit that with somebody else. So it's not great if I start, while she doesn't even have the yarn.

So this leaves me with the Kauni. I know the pattern, I don't have a swatch yet, but that I will be able to work out. And about half the Kauni balls I'll have to turn around, so they turn around the colour sequence. I'll have to calculate that a bit, but I've got the stole, so I can see the sequence and plan that appropriately, so the two strands won't meet in the same colour.

Rewinding the skeins has a second positive effect by the way: Kauni skeins like all skeins have it in their nature to all look alike. So if I re-wind them to differently shaped skeins, I'll be able to perfectly well tell apart one "colour" from the other.

Since I'm leaving today for my Christmas holiday, this is now my wish for you all out there to have a Happy Christmas. And we'll meet again soon!

Weitere Fortschritte / Further Progress

Nun bin ich soweit, wie ich heute sein wollte. Sorry für die durchaus diskussionswürdigen Fotos, sie sind heute früh halb sechs entstanden.

I've made the progress I planned for today. Sorry for the badly taken pictures, I made them today at 5.30 a.m.

1. Die Gansey-Socken sind fertig. Das ist ein wunderbares Knitpicks-Garn, mit dem ich die gestrickt habe. Sind leider ein bisschen zu klein für den Sockenspanner, deshalb blitzt es da hell durch. Das Muster ist einfach und wunderschön und ich habe das garantiert nicht zum letzten Mal gestrickt.

The Gansey-Socks are done. They're knitted of a beautiful Knitpicks-yarn. Unfortunately they are a little small for the sock-holder, so the white shines through. The pattern is great and I certainly haven't knit that for the last time.



2. Zwei Tücher gespannt / Two shawls blocked:

Das Rote ist natürlich unfotografierbar und aus einer Zusammensetzung aus Undine und Fizzi, das Ganze in Drops Alpaca doppelt.

The red one is of course unfotographable. The pattern is a mixture of Undine and Fizzi, knitted in Drops Alpaca with two strands.

Das Schware ist eine Travelling Woman mit ein paar zusätzlichen Mustersätzen. Mir gefallen beide gut, wobei ich froh bin, dass Undine/Fizzi für ein noch recht kleines Mädchen ist, so dass sie auch den Rücken warm kriegt. Für mich wäre diese Pfeilform schlicht zu schmal.

The black one is a Travelling Woman with some additional pattern repeats. I like both, however I'm glad that the Undine/Fizzi will be presented to a quite young girl, so she will have her back sufficiently warm. For me this arrow-form would be just a little to narrow.


3. Alle Geschenke sind verpackt und diejenigen, die sich auf den Postweg machen müssen, haben heute den Weg angetreten und werden hoffentlich noch rechtzeitig ankommen.

All presents are packed and those, which will have to be shipped, started their journey today and will hopefully reach their recipients on time.

4. Mein letztes Geschenk, ein wundervoller Schal, ist angefangen und auch schon ein Stück hochgestrickt. Wird auf jeden Fall auch noch fertig.

My last present will be a beautiful scarf. I started it today and made some progress already. So I'm very confident that this will also be done by Christmas.

Fleißig / Busy

Hui, heute ging es wies Brezel Backen. Schauen wir mal meine alte Liste an:

• Eine Mütze: Fertig, eine muss ich noch

• Ein paar Socken: Dreiviertel Fertig, wird heute noch fertig
• Tücher spannen: Fertig, die liegen hier grade schön gespannt
• Schal fertig stricken: Schalteile könnten fertig werden, hab mich aber umentschieden.

Also jetzt noch die Gansey-Socken und eine Mütze und ich bin durch mit Weihnachtsgeschenken. Hallelujah!

So there's the gansey-socks and another hat left and I'm done with Christmas business. Hallelujah!

Da ist er nun, unser Bilderkurs zum zweifarbigen Stricken. Er ist gestern spontan unter Mitwirkung der Anwesenden im Strickcafé bei Beate entstanden. Deshalb sieht man im Hintergrund zuweilen eine Teetasse, ein paar Plätzchen und generell ein bisschen Durcheinander. Auf jeden Fall hoffen wir, er hilft.

Mein Blog lässt wie gesagt keine Dokumente zu. Deshalb gibts den Kurs in elf Bildern.

This is now the picture-instruction on stranded knitting. This was a rather spontaneous idea yesterday in knitting café at Beate's, and is a collaborative effort of the people present ;-) That's why you can see a tea cup, some cookies and everything in background in a little array. Never mind, we hope it helps.

Jetzt habe ich grade ungefähr eineinhalb Stunden an dem Bilderkurs fürs zweifarbige Einhandstricken gebastelt und endlich eine präsentable .pdf produziert, jetzt kann ich hier keine Dokumente anhängen. Kriege ich einen Fön oder was?

Okay, gebt mir einen Tag und morgen ist das Ding dann drin als Bilderkurs zum Mitschneiden.

I just tinkered around the picture story on stranded knitting with both strands around the left index finger and finally got to a presentable .pdf format, now I perceive I can't present documents for download here. Am I daft or what?

Well then, give me a day and there will be pictures with instructions on single-handed stranded knitting.
